Lettuce plant gone to flower/seed growing up along one of my apple trees. I don’t have to plant lettuce. It comes up like dill all over my garden. If it is not growing in a bad spot, I let it grow to eat and continue to self-seed my gardens.
Took a walk out back along the swamp. I haven't been through the trail in months. There were some indian pipe or ghost plants. Jewel weed plants grazed by deer again. We must have thousands in the area, must be tasty to the deer. Found only one flowering. Saw the likely culprits this morning. Lots of mushrooms around, this one was the most interesting.
The lupine seed pods are about to drop here. Does anyone have tips on harvesting and planting them for next year? I'd like to get them before they fall into the planting beds. Kitchen window view from a few days ago. A bit of everything. Lots of pollinato varieties.
Some different daylillies have popped open And I noticed some area rose of sharon were blooming. So, I checked mine closer and sure enough a few blossoms at the top had opened. Then, I harvested some blueberries. Blueberry pancakes will be made this weekend.

I’ll check with my mom on this- she is the expert in my family. But just spitballing here- could you wrap some fine mesh (like pantyhose mesh) loosely... like a bag of sorts, containing the seed pods and cinched up around the stalk? If that made sense... not enough coffee in me yet.
I did read that those little bags work. I was thinking should the seeds go into dry storage for the fall/winter or planted now and self-seed. Greater risk from critters getting them now and through the winter. Lots of voles and mice here.
Let them dry on the plant, then harvest them just before they burst open. Since not all burst at once, the early bursters are a good indicator. If you plan on saving the seed inside and broadcasting next year, put them in the freezer. Those seeds need to bet cold before they will germinate. You could probably keep them in the fridege for several months, then place them in the freezer Dec-March. Otherwise you can sow in the fall and let Mother Nature take care of the chilling part. That is what I did with the seed I harvested from Whitefield and they came up really well. Broadcast them on bare ground. If you cover them, use very little soil. Those seeds are tiny little suckers if I remember correctly.
Sounds like inside storage is what I will do and sow in the spring. The pods are about ready to open. Thanks for the tips!
The first cone on the butterfly bush is now open. The cone and ballon flowers continue to carry the day. More flowers on the rose of sharon. Double flowers
Very nice. Despite watering thru last summer and some this summer, one butterfly bush has only made it to about 6" tall (most growth in the last 10 days) and the other died. I did not site them well to deal with droughts when I planted them 2 years ago. I have no doubt that they would have been fine if we had had the regular precipitation since they were planted, but that didn't happen.
