Hi friends. I finally scored a truckload of hardwood from the city on my way home from work this morning. I split this cookie up by hand, out of curiosity. I grabbed several other large rounds of it. It’s heavy. Very yellow grain. Definitely hard wood. It’s really solid too. Thanks! CL
First decent hardwood score that I’ve had this year! I do typically find a fair amount of it throughout the year though.
You either have Mulberry or Osage Orange, That appears from the bark & the 2 small pieces on the split in the middle photo to be more like Mulberry.
I was thinking Mulberry or Osage like JimBear said. But the bark is much deeper and more coarse than any Mulberry I’ve ever had.
I really don’t think it’s BL. As far as I know we don’t have BL in Colorado. I’ve never even seen a BL tree.
I’ve never seen a behemoth Mulberry so I can’t speak to Mulberry that has furrows that deep. There’s only one Osage Orange in Connecticut that I’m aware of and I’ve never seen it in person. Now I’m second guessing myself. BL bark can vary a lot even in my area.... I think you can’t go wrong with any of the three contenders so great score regardless.
I’ve seen some huge Mulberry trees in Denver. We have Osage in eastern CO. But Osage usually isn’t large diameter. These rounds that I have are large ... 20+ inches in diameter. Very confusing.
Ive never seen it in person but I think its Osage. BL doesn't have that white sapwood. Bark doesn't look like any mulberry ive seen
It’s funny how trees grow differently around the country. Around here most of the Mulberries I see are backyard/orchard sized trees. If I see one 12” DBH it’s what I’d consider big. Out on the plains growing in full sun I guess they really sprawl out.
Sure looks like BL to me. But hey I’ve never seen Orange or even mulberry for that matter. Has the yellow of a BL that’s been cut for awhile but not split. Otherwise they’re a little greener. Looked it up. Depending on which map you believe there is BL in Colorado, or isn’t LOL Nice find anyway. Enjoy PS. No ones ever seen a Black Locust tree until they find their first one. Tend to hide in plain sight
I did find one tree that was quite yellow compared to most others I see with a greenish ting. It was also lighter in weight. Also seen some BL heartwood that turned a deep burgundy when exposed to air. The colors can vary.
I think its osage even though ive never seen one in person. Too yellow for locust and the bark doesnt resemble any mulberry ive seen even with minimal experience maybe a couple face cord scrounged. Either way awesome score there CL. May the rest of your scores this year be hardwood!
Aint that the truth! Still think back when i first joined FHC and you asked me about the BL in Windsor area. I didnt know about it and now look at me. Luckily my locust mania is in remission.
All the BL I cut has a white sapwood band....you won't see it in a dead tree, but living trees have.it.
One more thing that has me leaning BL is that dark brown-black pitch within the voids in the wood grain. I’ve seen that in plenty of locust. I’m not sure if that’s associated with ant infestation, locust borers or just general rot in the trunk.
