My brother texted me last week and asked if I needed more firewood. I always reply yes no matter what. He sent me this pic of a Beech that got knocked over in a storm. Lightning took out half of it two years ago. My grandson & I loaded up and went north an hour and a half today to tackle the job. I cut it up into manageable pieces for my brother's small tractor. We had some good help from family and a neighbor. Roger came up with the big gooseneck dump trailer as well. Got it down, cut up and loaded just after noon. Had a nice lunch with the whole gang and was home by 4:00. Not bad considering 3hrs driving. Here's Case on the stump with my 660 .404 set up before I flush cut it. 44" at the base. I guesstimate about 2 1/2 cord on the two trailers. Decent haul and nice weather. Mid 70's with a breeze off Lake Michigan.
Thanks! He's learning fast & loves this stuff. I never thought I'd enjoy teaching him all this so much. Headed out to pick him up for another day in the woods now. His choice to come.

C & P Logging strikes again, this time in my backyard. Had a dead Pine blowdown hang in a Cherry tree in the last wind. Widowmaker right over the access rd to my lower lot. Didn't get pics of the hanger . I did get these though. I notched the Cherry which was leaning about 20 degrees anyway, bored it, the cut the trigger from behind the safety of an Oak. Dropped them all into the opening & went to work. Case backing the skidder in to check tires & fluids. Next up, pulling the logs to the processing area. Case & Roger hooking the brush rake up to the new 160 Allis I just picked up. It's gonna be Case's tractor when he's a bit older. Started after lunch & got done around 2:30. Chipped the brush into the woods & raked up the trash. Tractor works nice! Another great day with my grandson.
And I thought I had a good day. Well, actually I did.. but not as gooder as yours Happy Independence day to you and your family.
I got sum beech in my back yard the other day...small beech that has had some trunk rot going on the west side for years...didn't seem to affect the health of the tree much, but the rot did seem to be growing, so I figured the tree would not see a ripe old age, but what I didn't expect was a weird wind from the NNW that stressed the week side of the trunk and took it down. Tree was probably 8-10" DBH and the trunk was only 6-8' long before branching out...very bushy tree...took 2 hours to delimb it and yielded minimal firewood...1/4 of a cord, maybe. Lots of smalls. Tree broke off right at the ground, and then sorta barber chaired itself...
