So many good people on the FHC forums. For a guy that has not been around for a while, I am honestly touched by the replys. I am still sorting out the wood and believe it or not just found out that there is more top be had. To Backwoods Savage and Redneck thanks for the offer for help. I will keep on doing what I have been for now. Just me. Pic of what is stacked as of tonight.
Lots of work right there. Much respect. Appears you have the same system that I have used. Elevated tire. Fiskars. Good combo. Good exercise as well Be careful and take your time with that heavy stuff. Tough on the body.
For sure, on the tire trick. Just throw whatever fits in and go at it. No bending over till done. As far as the X27 goes, I have not used a better tool. Just the right weight, not expensive and lifetime guarantee. Yee I try to be careful. Take breaks and not over do it. after all, I will be 76 this November.
Don't give up hope on the tree services. I'd try to find the smaller operations. Those are the guys that really enjoy saving dumping fees. Also around these parts it's absolutely ludicrous how much free firewood there is posted on FB MP. I'd definitely look to get some wood that will be ready sooner than that oak. That said your oak looks absolutely delicious. Yum and congrats on a beautiful score!
My sentiments exactly regarding the tire. I was just out there with sopping wet 30" white oak rounds 16" tall and just took care of business with the x27 and the occasional wedge/sledge to get them small enough to fit in the tire and then whack, whack, whack, whack to my heart's desire. I was chopping for about 5 minutes and then sit down for 5 with some ice water. I did two of those huge rounds, stacked them, and then spent another hour or so moving spruce from that sideyard to the front yard so it's closer to the front door for easier access. With 3 partially herniated discs and 45 years old I'd say I feel close to 76 these days!!!
And because of that back problem there is no way I'd be stacking like that either. Also perhaps it is time to get thyself some hydraulics! I'll never forget when I finally broke down and got a splitter. What a glorious time I had finally being able to split wood again! And I also learned I could do it all while sitting and not having to lift the wood!!!
Help did arrive today in the form of a neighbor and his splitter. In 2 short hours we split more than I have done by hand in the last week. I think it is time for serious consideration of a hydraulic splitter. It is not that I cannot still do the hand work, but perhaps it is time to make it "occasional" rather than all of the time. To LordOfTheFlies, yes I use the tire, wedges etc., but I have been lucky to avoid injury other than those requiring a couple Advil. My wife has offered some advise aslo. The wood is here, it isn't going anywhere.
