Back in April I made a post about this tree. Had lots of outside signs of stress and when I was investigating around the base I found termites. Scheduled my tree guy to come take it down (had a few others that needed to go too) and I'm so glad I did. There was a lot of damage to the tree even up high and the base had a huge hole in it that went to the ground where the bugs had been eating out the center. I live down in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and with Hurricane season upon us I'm really glad I pulled the trigger on this guy.

Caught a picture of the climber that limbed the top out before they fell the main trunk, made me queasy just watching him do that.

Here's a shot of them with the trunk down about to buck up the rounds.

    The rotted based.

I cleared a small area next to my barn lean-to for them to place the rounds that weren't totally ate up with termites. Gonna be a lot of splitting in my future!

But seriously, looks like you did real good by getting it taken down. Lotsa decay in there.

oh yeah those truck rounds and the other poles they placed from the other trees they cut are going to keep me busy for a while.

I traded in my future birthday and Christmas presents so that I could finally buy a splitter. I really wanted a lite commercial unit like Wolf Ridge splitter but I only split a cord or two at the most per year so this was in price range and so far has been great to use and eats up every stringy knotted round I throw at it.

Nice! I bet it serves you well for a long time. I’m really needing some sort of table or extension like that for mine. I’ve been stacking two rounds up for a place to sit wood while
I split down the other half.

I just got the same one as well. Pretty awesome knocking out a "face cord" in 15 minutes.

Jeremy, you got some good firewood from that tree.

I have some friends who live not too far from you and they have really had lots of rain this year. I makes me wonder how it has been for you?

    ooh, la la
and the stump is nice, too

we had one that was just starting with the stump rot - no carpenter ants yet except way up the top where a big branch had broken off years ago. Had it taken down as it was towering over the electric lines at the road. Had a big crack in it after a big wind storm and could have fallen on the house. Got 3 plus cord out of it.

Similar story. 70 year old oak looming over the house. Big branch came off in a storm landing on the roof. Got 3-4 cords out of it.

Tree climbers are a different breed.

Good job on the decision to get it down, that's a man-killer if left go. And you've got some fantastic firewood coming from those big rounds!

Smart move taking that down. Piece of mind is priceless. Some good wood to come from it despite the rot. Got your work cut out. We have a similar tree on the side yard the landlord claims he wants to take down. Good lean toward the shed. About the same size as yours.

That was a nice tree, great wood even in the bottom sections, nice splitter too.
My wife traded in a chance for a diamond ring for her 30th anniversary and told me to spend the $$ on a TSC 30 ton splitter, it has served us well. 0628211200.jpg

It didn't take Mrs PMM long to put a stop to the bling. Kubota ZD 28, Bad Boy Buggy, manure spreader, wiring the barn vapor proof, tractor shed...
I still get to do the maintenance.
