    Hi Guys -

Thinking about getting one of those Stihl clones (Holzfforma G888) to run on my chainsaw mill, rather than putting the wear and tear on my huskies. The bar/chain combo for this saw is .404/.063 and is a 42" monster. I don't need a bar that long and it seems like the .404 chain is more for the longer bars.

If I wanted to run a shorter bar, say 24-32", in 3/8/.050, I would have to change the drive sprocket on the power head, correct? Is there anything else I would need to take into consideration?

    Yes sir.
Drive sprocket must match chain gauge.
Thickness of drivers doesn't matter but gauge will.

you could probably go with full comp chain on the shorter bar without loss and maybe a 9 pin

You've got one of these G888? Run's pretty good? I hate to buy this chinese stuff, but if it works good for a milling powerhead, I can't beat the price.

    Thickness of drivers is gauge.

Not the g888, I have an 084 and 661 and contemplating getting another saw with 2 eights. I meant same about the thread title.
I’ve watched a bunch of videos from prominent YouTube saw guys using the g888. For the money it seems worth trying. They talk like they are built better than the early years of factory assembled clones.
