The pump for my pool filter gave up the ghost this year. I ordered another one which will come in next week. In the meantime I thought maybe I could use the pool cover pump I had on hand and adapt it to flow into the filter housing. For less than $10 worth of fittings it was worth a try. I got it all together and it doesn’t seem to be leaking. The only problem is that it doesn’t produce enough flow to really move a large volume of water, so it was only partially successful. Figured I’d share in case anyone ever had the same boneheaded idea  Maybe if I had a larger pump it would’ve worked.

Are you saying I'm not qualified enough for an entry level hydrologist position despite my obvious mastery of plumbing and most importantly common sense?!
Desperate times here! My pool was turning green fast, I figured give this a shot and prove to the forum just how limited my knowledge runs in this area

Hydrology "is the scientific study of the movement, distribution, and management of water"
Your theory needs work but you get a B for plumbing and if you said "Hold my beer" I'd give you an A+

Do you use a sand filter or paper filter? I couldn’t control the algae with the paper filter and chlorine so I switched to a salt water pump/sand filtration system a few years ago. $300. Works great. My pool is 4’x16’. About 5000 gallons above ground. Take it down every year.

We've got the same size pool then. I've been using the paper filters, which worked fine last year when the pump was working as it should. Maybe leaving the pump out in the elements all winter was what did mine in? When I took it apart today the impeller was running eccentrically and getting hot. There was a lot of resistance turning it. I'm assuming a bad bearing/bushing/whatever internally. My brother in law has the same size pool as well and he swears by the saltwater and sand filter too. I probably should've just pulled the trigger on that instead of going with OEM.

I'm sure I would get along well with your BIL, hope you do as well.

You can still get one.. for future use.. I’m sure there are a bunch of different brands made by the same manufacturer but mine is the Intex.. 125 lbs of salt and 1.25 lbs of cyanuric acid and we are good runs about 6 hours per day.. boost mode once per week. Pump had an issue that may have been caused by lightning and they mailed a new one without many questions.. I’m not using my paper filter pump so if you need that one you can have it.

Oh yeah, we're more than good. I go over there, plink targets and BS with him. He's been laid up from back surgery so I do what I can for him.

I think brenndatomu is quite pleased with his saltwater filter for his pool too.

Our pump gave up this year too. I took it to the local electrical repair shop for r/r. $170 later a bad bearing was replaced. :(

Cheap compared to what this stuff costs new now…. Worth it on a 95 degree day…

Looks like the newer models are for sale on a web site that I choose not to endorse due to their overwhelming influence and control. Price went up quite a bit.. I’m sure you can find it…
