Ok folks. I've been putting off updating Judgy's situation cause it's been in flux but here we go again. If you are new to this thread, I'd say go back a few pages for the backstory. For you that know the deal, here we go. About 4 days ago, the landlady who was renting her place out to the lunatics showed up at my house (I don't live in a town or even a community - I live in a pretty isolated area with neighbors no closer than a 1/4 mile. My "neighbors" are all really good folks that I've known for at least 4 years except for the lunatics that started renting out the little cabin down the road from me a few months ago). Anyway, the landlady showed up in the afternoon while the dogs and I were hanging out on the porch and grilling some burgers (burgers for me, freezer burned elk and deer scrap for them). She said she'd been in touch with the husband who went to Alaska and I guess he's coming back in September and was asking about "his" dog. To make a long story not quite so long, I let her take Judgy cause I don't really have any ground to stand on in terms of calling him mine (and he'll jump into a car with anybody cause he's still just sort of a big goofy puppy). Broke my heart but what could I do? Anyway, guess what...heard a commotion on my porch this morning. There's Judgy. I gave him some breakfast then called the landlady but haven't heard back. Not sure what's going on but this is ridiculous. She lives maybe 10 miles from me and I'm sure he didn't travel that distance from her house to mine. She probably had him with her while looking at her property and he just took off and came up here when she let him out of the truck. He's crashed out on my porch right now and I've left another message for the landlady. Just a sad deal that sucks even more cause he's such a sweetheart. Anyway, just figured I'd try to summarize the situation since I brought it up here in the first place.

    PS. Sorry for the mini-novel.

Don't be sorry for the post. It is heartbreaking for you but I am glad you mentioned the dog being at your place to the sheriff. I have a feeling that Judgy is going to land on your doorstep every time he is let free. All you can do at this point is keep phoning the landlady and tell her where he is. IF he ends up staying with you until the "owner" comes home to get him, I would keep a running total on his expenses and ask to be reimbursed. You are not running a free dog boarding house. Other than that I don't know what to say. Maybe the disguise that Loon suggested for Judgy!!!

Thanks WW. Your posts concerning this situation have been spot-on and appreciated. Good point on keeping track of expenses...as you know, it's not the money that matters but if this yahoo is assuming he can just leave his dog behind for months at a time then re-appear like nothing happened.......nope! The whole thing makes me angry so I try to take a measured approach to posting about it...but I'm pizzed and starting to look forward to seeing his original "owner" in September. I'm glad there's enough time between now and then for me to get my wits about me. And who knows. This guy may never even show up! In the final analysis, I suppose these are the risks of getting emotionally involved. Still a sucky deal though.

Thanks for sharing the updated info
At least for now he is in good hands.
Sounds like you should have never told them where the dog was ,they abandoned him .
I'm not saying you should have taken to a shelter but, If he was in a shelter they wouldn't get him back after abandoning him .
They don't deserve to get him back but, like you said don't really have any ground to stand on .
If Judgy doesn't end up staying with you I hope things work out better for him in the future.
Sounds like the guy expected his wife to take care of the dog and she did not, so maybe if the guy gets him back he will take good care of him IDK
    Good Luck with this
    Let us know

Thanks HD. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that when the guy left for Alaska he was assuming the dog would be cared for by his wife. But even that get's murkier...his wife is truly "off". I won't go into details because it's not really my place to talk about it but suffice to say, his just up and leaving for Alaska was about the most cowardly and weak a move as he could have made...and he's no gem himself and we'll just leave it at that for now.

Thanks to all you folks for letting me sort of vent off about this. I was getting ready to make phone calls and (probably) leave messages that wouldn't have helped the situation at all. Seriously.

If Judgy stays with you till Sep.
You could just Tell the guy that if he wants the dog, he will have to hire a lawyer.
Edit : Or you could just tell that to the landlady right now
Sounds like He may not be able to afford that , if not he's SOL

You're right on every single point HD. My stance on the whole matter is that I didn't ask for any of this. The dog originally got taken in by "owners" that were not prepared for the commitment of having a dog. The "owners" personal relationship melted down over the course of three or four months and they went their separate ways, leaving the dog to basically fend for himself. He (Judgy) came to my house at that time and since then, I've given him a stable, loving home (I took him backpacking in the Cabinet Wilderness a week ago and I'm pretty sure it was the funnest experience of his life). Judgy views me and my property as "his" now. He's been through enough as far as I'm concerned and I just don't like the idea of him bouncing around from home to home at this point. Besides, He'll have a blast in a couple weeks when I head up to my favorite fishing lake (leigh lake). The place is spectacular and I'd hate for him to miss it. :seasoned:

I have a good feeling Judgy will end up with you permanently.

It sounds like Judgy's owner is a flake, I would bet the lunatic does not have the fortitude to keep retrieving him from you, as Judgy has obviously chosen YOU as his owner :)

I witnessed a similar situation in the 1980's. A strange dog kept returning to my fathers home after running away from his owner(s). They got tired of picking Spotty up, only to find Spotty kept going back to my father. Spotty (large white terrier mix with a few black spots) happily lived the rest of his years with my father and his other dogs.....

He obviously wants your kindness and likes your other dogs. I don't doubt he traveled 10 miles to get back to you, goofy puppy or not, (I have other stories, both personal and worked at a humane society).

    Wishing you and him well.

I'd quickly put the house up for sale and get outta Dodge ;)

Just kidding Trundle. Are you in any situation to offer this guy a bunch of money for Judgy "IF" he comes back? And i'd take the chance with the landlady and tell her you will take care of Judgy until this guy supposedly comes back.

Was it overnight until he got back to your place? Sounds like it just took his sniffer a few hours to find his way back HOME ;)

Tough situation, hopefully calm heads will prevail. I hope Judgy ends up with you.

The landlady has shown that she can't control the dog. I like the idea of asking her if you can keep him until the man "owner" reappears, and then talking it out with him, and maybe as Loon suggested offer the guy some money for the dog if it come to that. The owner should just give you the dog, but keeping what's right for Judgy in mind, if it takes a few bucks to make that happen so be it. If it comes to that, it may not feel right to you, but I bet you will forget about the money in no time.

I was thinking the same thing, tho I know you didn't ask for this scenario Trun. Maybe, try to get the owner to pay back all expenses since you've had him, and when that falls thru, offer a couple hundred bucks to the pinhead. Can't imagine he won't jump on it, but if he doesn't, at least you'll know you did all you could for ole Judgy. If the 2 jugheads aren't married, at least you won't have to wonder about the missus coming back later for the dog, if the guy gives him up. Sad truth is there are way too many people out there who don't even treat their kids this good. :headbang:

I'd keep the dog and also notify the sheriff again as to what has transpired. I too have a feeling that he will end up with you....Paging Karma, "You are needed in NW Montana"

I wouldn't call her any more. You are under no obligation to do that. You could call the husband in Alaska and explain where the situation is at or just leave it alone. My fear is that the husband may come knocking on your door. That would be the kicker. Got any hair dye?

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and ideas. Pretty nice being able to vent on here, that's for sure. Still haven't heard back from the landlady today so I guess I'll just carry on. Might load up the doggies and a chainsaw and go on a firewood hunt here in a bit. It's been over 90 degrees lately so anything remotely physical needs to happen either in the morning or the evening. Pretty sure Lexy and Judgy agree...they're both hunkered down in the shade under the porch and are looking about as motivated as me right now (not very). Thanks again and I'll just sort of keep ya'll posted as things unfold.
