There’s one other saw junkie in my town that I know of and he is really smart! ( Husky guy)
Hadn’t talked to him for a while, but over the weekend he stopped by the tree job I was helping with. This morning he flagged me down to show me a saw that we talked about both yesterday and before. It is a 338xpt California model. He’s pretty sure it needs a piston, but it still has some compression. Offered to sell it to me for $50.
Any body got any thoughts on the subject?
The only visible issue is the spark plug cover on the rear is missing
He claims the California model has a different piston and cylinder or something, maybe same as a 346

The Husqvarna top handles I used didn’t last long at all. It may be fine for an occasional use saw. Hopefully they have improved them because they had good balance and cut good.

I traded in a husky 335 XPT many years ago I think around 2001 from a tree service it took a dive from a bucket and was beat up, the customer needed a saw that day I ended up putting a new starter and chain cover on it and I have been using it ever since (a lot of hard use ) and it keeps on running . The saw is a 1999 model I also had several customers with the jonsered version and they all ran well I am surprised you had trouble with yours JB

If that top handle is anything like a 346 it should be a hot rod. I would think a CA saw would have more to do with emissions & safety guards & such but I have been mistaken before. If you can do the work on the saw it sounds like a good deal.

lol, reminds me of the time I vacuumed out our stove , a long long time ago, the Electrolux sucked up a bit of hot ash, and it looked like a jet on combat takeoff, fogged the whole living room lol:hair:

Yes but those aren’t top handles so they really are not applicable to the chainsaw debate...

Husqvarna does have a rather diverse history & it is some interesting reading.

What did you decide SHB? I still have my 334 and havent touched it in over a year. Trying to sell it yet. IMO grab it. If same as 346 gotta be a kick azz little saw.
Once you get used to a top handle, you'll wonder why you didnt get one sooner.
