So I had a college kid working for me today and he sends me a picture of the wedge on my iron and oak splitter about an hour ago. This has safely split 1500-1600 cords of wood but she couldn’t handle anymore stress....I have a guy I know who should be working on it tonight so hopefully it won’t be down too long.
Whatcha think buzz-saw ? Whip one up from 400 series stainless steel, heat treat it... A once in a lifetime splitting wedge. The hardest part would be securing it to the I-beam in a way that you don't have to worry about shearing the hardware off.
Hey there is always a weak link; think of the hardware as built in safety ? Kind of like throwing that 1000 HP big block and big slicks in your car with the stock driveshaft and " U " joints. What's going to be on the ground next ?? That's why I like working with metal , you have so many options. If it doesn't work ; cut , grind , weld and just make it better. Wood working on the other hand is not that easy . At Least for me. If it doesn't work I just cut it up and burn it.
Dang! I’ve been using my splitter for about 10 years and it’s almost perfectly straight on the leading edge. What in tarnation are ya splittin’?
Ive never seen a splitter with that many cords through it. It looks like it has that many cords through it. She'll be up n' runnin in no time. You can borrow my Isocore in the meantime Joe!
Everything haha. Lots of tree service wood. Big nasty knots and crotches. Metal is always something to contend with. Also, when you split sweet gum, you can watch the wedge bend and twist to the side some as that nasty stuff breaks apart.
I can hear that conversation now. Now this one here was a big rock in a 22" round, this one here was a chunk on fence, those three was when he tried to split a Cummins.......
