I have no idea what or how he was doing it. The notch was where the back cut was and we had hoped the tree didnt fall backwards not that it wouldve caused any problems. Im glad i didnt see it happen.
Ran a tank and a half through the 500i bucking the trunk up. Raised off the ground which was a huge plus. What branches were left shattered on impact. Ran the 25" bar with full skip. Dead white oak some hard stuff. Ill switch to 22" bar and cut more tomorrow.
i didnt put a MM to it. If i remember maybe today Seemed a lot drier and had only a faint aroma compared to fresh cut. The tree has been dead at least three years as i felled a dead one close by in September of 2018. Between him and the neighbor there's maybe a dozen dead ones in their back woods.
Oh my, that stump! However in order to add something that can be constructive. A very experienced class III feller tutored me. He had advice that most would not think of. If you start felling a tree and you really screw up the hinge/ back cut or both just STOP before the tree gets unstable. Abandon the cut and just redo it correctly above in sound wood.
He originally had the notch on the felling cut side with just a kerf where the notch should have been. (the tree fell in the correct direction) Nice that you got an education from a pro.
True. Cant even drive through the yard as its squishy. I got stuck in his yard three years ago doing the same. Look carefully at the OP pics and you can see his PA in back. Also my reasoning for not felling the others in his woods
Good Lord. I beat myself up if the back and front of my hinge wood isn't parallel. Thanks for posting this. I feel much better about myself now
Yep.. I was going to ask if buZZsaw BRAD 's friend was an actual beaver. Because that's sure what it looks like to me. Glad that nobody got hurt, because that stump looks like someone died.
Yep, that's how I was taught as well, & I ain't too proud to admit I've used that technique a time or two, much safer. Brad, crawler tractor with a winch, 1.5k per tree removed & cleaned up and you could pay for the tractor.
