?

Would you have cut it up yourself? Or paid to have it done?

    Hello Fellow Firewood Hoarders ,

I had a large soft maple in the back yard that we had cut down by a tree trimmer. Instead of having him clean it up, I did it myself and saved a BIG chunk of change! Also have already sold some of this wood to a customer! So I'm profiting on both ends! Cant beat that.

Hope you guys enjoy the video.

    Have a good one everyone

I hate paying people to do things I can do. I see people say all the time they’re too busy to: Plow their driveway, mow the grass, cut or split wood, change the car or trucks oil, simple plumbing repairs, etc. Then you see them and they sit on the couch 20 waking hours a week. Often they don’t even work or work part time. Good job man!!! This country needs more hard workers like you!

I would cut that up myself with no problem. I would have gone about it differently than you however. I always start at the top end of the tree and try to cut as much of that small stuff while its hanging in the air. It takes way more time once its on the ground and you have to be careful not to run your saw into the dirt. Also, once limbed, I would only cut to firewood length unless something was too high in the air to reach or a spar was under too much pressure and would cause pinching. But you got it done so good job.

I just did the same with 2 ash trees. Paid the pro to fell them as they were close to the house and I cut them all up and handled everything aside from the felling ( which I assisted) and the stump grinding.

X2. I love it when the whole tree is off the ground. One of the first things i looks for and use gravity to my advantage. Doesnt happen a whole lot though. Hills arent often helpful!

I am wanting to cut the end off and make a table out of it... you think that would work out?

The base of the tree was actually pretty high off the ground at the beginning.. And the only thing that was stopping me from starting at the base and moving towards the tops was the steep incline. If the rounds got to rolling they went off the edge of the cliff into no mands land lol

Running a chainsaw and working with firewood ( in any instance... ie splitting, chainsawing, stacking, delivering) is just relaxing to me. It doesn't even feel like work to me lol, and I bet others in this thread feel exactly the same!

I'd venture to guess you're right! The members of this forum don't represent the average person though.

I dont see why not. I know MikeyB made a nice table out of a stump cut off. Other than cutting it off im not sure the best way to go about it...ie to prevent checking, warping etc.

You say you were paying for the felling, it sounds like you were really paying for the insurance coverage.

Why not cut yourself? I think you just did what all of us would have done.

I’d have cut it up myself also, maybe even dropped it, but don’t know what it looked like standing. I have access to a larger front end loader so I probably would have pulled the whole thing up to more level ground first. But It looks like that would have been a fun one.
You got it done safely, so good job
