The neighbor asked if I could bring down a Box Elder over at his mom's house. Both of them live only a couple blocks from me. (The whole town is only 8 blocks east to west and 6 block north to south). It's the box Elder leaning way over towards the street. Here is another look from the other direction My biggest fear was that I would get my saw stuck cutting from the side where it was leaning or worst of all, it barber-chairing on me. But all went well, no injuries. This one only took about an hour and a half with my boys' help. It was a little rotten in the middle, but that's to be expected with Box Elder.
Bark and wood don't look even remotely right to me...especially the bark...maybe there are different types of box elder?
It's whole life was lived in the shadow of the massive cottonwood right next to it, nothing would look normal there
Some of the wood the box elder is sitting on is red elm.....I tried to get just the new box elder rounds in the pictures
Nope, I tried to get a small wedge cut out of the side it was leaning towards but it started pinching my saw before I could get the 2 cuts to meet up. So, I just went for it, and cut it at about 2 feet from the base. I heard some popping and cracking and jumped back. Then just nibbled at it, taking small swipes and down she came.
Instead of starting a new thread, I figured I would just add to this one...... Gotta love it when a little bit of ash just appears in the driveway!!
