Got a few chains ‘n bars? Post em up. Where I’m at now, I don’t think I’ll ever have to buy chain again. L to R is 16, 18, 20, 24 and 28, then some .325. Right of the roller is gtg/build-off chain. Long bar loops not pictured. I keep my saws w/ bars on, so add about 14 more loops to what you see. Recently picked up a nice breaker/spinner combo and was finally able to resize some chains I had that didn’t fit any bars I owned.
Holy crap ! You don't count your links or loops ; you go by the mile ! Looks great hanging there and all organized the way you have it.
and i thought my CAD was bad. Hopefully i wont come down with whatever this disorder is called. Having extra chain is nice, but this is an extreme case! Did you do your own square grinding on those?
My buddy has 150 brand new in the box 20&24” 3/8 .50 xcut chains. I don’t think him and his brother will ever use them all. More stuff for the kids to auction off.
I will try to remember bro get a picture of mine. I need to spend some time on the grinder and sharpen them. My dull loops are pretty much were there all hanging now. Almost nothing on the sharp hooks at least in 72dl size. Well I have some brand new loops stashed away that are not shown.
Yes, everything square at this point has been sharpened by file. I did have a friend convert some on a grinder but that’s been a while back. All the new loops are still round. I have to run them at least once before I file. Damm. I think what I have will last me a lifetime. 215 and 100+ bars is... Do you sharpen them through their entire cutter length? I’ve heard of people that sharpen once or twice then throw them in a bucket. And I’ve seen someone with many buckets full bought at auctions.
I get most of my chains the way your talking about, minus the auction. I have a logger that sharpens them in the woods a few times till his guys get the cutters all outta wack. Then throws them in a toolbox. I then will get half a dozen or more of them from time to time and straighten them out on the grinder and run them till nothing left.
I gots a few chains & bars but not like some of you folks. I have a 100’ roll of 3/8” Carlton & 3 more GB bars in a box in the back room.
Nice!!! I haven’t done any major cutting for myself since I was a kid, but we cut plenty at work and I maintained all of the saws and chains. We hung chains up there as well. As a young kid in the early 70’s dad and I cut and split and sold a lot of wood to many customers. Basically there were two saws that we kept chains for. An 041 and an S10. Back then the only chains hanging were chains needing sharpening and usually about 6 for each saw needed sharpening at any given time so there were usually about a dozen chains hanging on the wall. After sharpening everything got dunked in gasoline and sloshed around to remove any filings, then removed from the gas and then hung them briefly which let the gas evaporate which didn’t take long. After drying every chain for each saw went into it’s own small bucket with lid and the chains placed inside covered with clean gear oil or bar oil. Dad made sure chains were clean, sharp and free from filings or grindings and them covered in clean oil. Zero chance of dirty chains or rusty chains that way. Another benefit was if we ever ran out of bar oil there was always enough in each small bucket to get us through a tank of gas to hopefully finish the job. Also it made sure that a fresh chain was well lubed and help lube the bar in case a saw quit oiling.
Couldnt load pic the other day. 36", 28", (2) 25", 20" (.375) 20" (.325) 18" hanging on top. All saws not pictured wearing a bar except 261 & 460 pictured. Extra chains in OEM boxes or tupperware broken down by pitch size.
