First of all, new guy here, greetings. While out looking for morel mushrooms yesterday, I ran across this tree only about a 1/4 mile from my house. My first thought is it got wrapped up by a bunch of vines and the tree engulfed it, but the closer I looked, the bark is the same as the tree. I walked around this tree several times, wondering what the heck? I showed the picture to a friend, and she said it looked like a tree she has seen that was caught in a tornado (the twisting action), and never recovered.. I don't know what kind of tree it is, but once it leafs out more I can go back and get a better look. It looks like it should be on a Harry Potter movie set. Has anyone ever seen anything like this?
Welcome! Glad to have you aboard. That's a truly unique tree, I too am uncertain of species. Look forward to more info.
That's one spooky lookin tree! Thinking about all that twisted grain and then trying to split *shivers* Welcome tho!
Looks like some giant screwed that tree into the ground! The bark puts me in mind of blue ash but the leaves don't appear to be compound. They almost look like some type of maple, but with this tiny, hand held screen I just can't tell.
There is a maple next to it. I will be going back to get a better look at the leaves, and some better pics. I'm also thinking of getting in touch with the Missouri Dept of Conservation about it.
stihl kicking , good to have you here. Be careful around that tree. Looks like a spring-loaded "Whomping Willow" if I've ever seen one. Be careful around it, they're kinda funny acting.....
That is weird! I wouldn't want to splir it!... Welcome to the club, stihl kicking ! Glad to have you!
That is a cool looking tree. Thanks for sharing. Welcome to the FHC StihlKicking Great to have you join us here. Not sure of the species or why that grew that way, but if i were to venture an opinion the bark has a catalpa look to it. Post some pics once it leaves out.
Higher up it looks like a sugar maple. Maybe the cork screw action are huge vines embedded in an underlying tree.
1st off, welcome to FHC! One thing you could do is go back when it has leaves to get an ID. I’ve noticed twisting before but not to that extent and look. Pretty cool!
Welcome aboard StihlKicking Looks like it may be one of those trees that discount box stores get there lumber from!
