First are peach blossoms. They look sick because they did not like the lower 20's. No peaches for us this year. The apples usually blossom from the 7th to the 10th of May every year. For sure this is not a normal year. Time will tell if they make it. Cherry blossoms too. This is a young tree. Crab apple. Blossoms ready to open. The tree that is more yellowish is sassafras and I love thos just before they leaf out. I tried for a close up but it didn't turn out too good. And to show the new growth on the young. pines
This year is not an extended winter nor drought early summer here. I think....it's called....Spring !!!!!!! Heavy deep snow a few weeks ago, followed by more snow and flurries the next weeks. Today is RAIN!! Everything is greening up.
Absolutely Sir Backwoods Savage - its here! Last week I posted about extended burning due to nights in the 20’s and today it was 87*. Also big for me, today marked the return of the hummingbirds!!!!
And we got to 84 here but I'm not sure about the official high. By Friday night we probably will have frost or freezing. Welcome spring, but I do not remember another time of hitting 80 in April. Usually late May before we see that here.
I see another occasion to burn coming early next week so I’m not able to shut the stove down yet and clean for the season-low 40’s at night on the horizon...yet with all the good you posted of blooms that have since passed here, the return of the hummingbirds and all things good comes the immediate return of gnats, wasps and undesirables...its a balancing act for sure-and the bain of my existence-the “no-see ums” that bite the crap out of your ankles and make me use DDT...CANT STAND THEM!!!! I’ve been buying up the Deepwoods OFF...Thank goodness for a shoulder supply of seasoned ash...
This year particularly we've notice some nasty nasty bugs biting the hec out of the kids and my wife. They flat out swarm you, I don't really recall this experience in past years this time of year. But they are small and I think I've narrowed it down to being no-see ums, but I could be wrong. Sometimes they fly right in your face too. Kids have big welts usually on the base of their hairline near the neck area, behind the ears. They don't bite me much if at all, but the dam mosquitoes make up for that.
We are already in a drought. There has only been one measurable rain event in April. I better check the sbh I planted this winter.
Ticks and mosquitos have been out for quite a while here, which is not all that unusual. What is unusual is that on April 15th, I saw lightning bugs out. I thought I was seeing things but nope, it was lightning bugs. I dont really know when they are usually out, but I'm pretty sure it's not that early. At least the Mayflies aren't out...yet...
