I was at a new project in southern PA today. Looked like about an acre of trees got taken down....and was chipped. Saw some oak,cherry and hickory stumps..... coulda been great
It just kills me to see 8-16" trees getting run through a chipper. Perfect firewood size & they just blow em away.
As the four lane highway in the area was upgraded to interstate, they cut trees way back. Had huge chipper machines grinding up everything. No one was allowed to get to the trees to get firewood. Tragic. had a developer clearing an area for a big apartment project. We had to pull protesters out of tree tops and blocking the roadwork. Some great timber could have been harvested, but no logging company would risk vandalism to their equipment.
Sadder story....my Johnson and Johnson Covid vaccine Monday ruined my plans to stack wood this week. missed three days which I had set aside for just stacking!!! Monday-got shot Tuesday-fever and extreme joint pain Wednesday minor fever still have joint pain Thursday-worked out of town.
There will always be more scores to work, eventually. Can't get all of them, that's for sure. I inquired about a large black walnut this week and missed out because I couldn't (wouldn't) take the entire tree. At least I was up front with the owner as he was with me. Really I just wanted a truckload to save for wood working, but the owner wanted the whole thing gone in one shot. I'm sure someone in a better position than I am went and cashed in on that deal.
Can't say for certain but judging by the pictures it was easily 24" DBH. It was open grown too so there were a ton of limbs to it.
Nice to run into someone who has a walnut that needs taken down who isn’t trying to just get it done for free but is also trying to get the cutter to pay them for the wood! Especially such a nice sized one!
