When are you putting it to the test?

Shooting for tomorrow. Well, sawing for it anyways. Dern, I may need to use cooking oil as I think am out of bar oil. Going to smell like potatoes.. potatoes and locust.

A better question is how small a bar can I put on my 70 cc saw? :) :)

Some BL cuts like butter. Some is hard like steel and feels like it wants to rip the crankshaft out of my 372. Whatever you do go easy and let the chain do the work or you will be shopping for a new saw.

Might not be your best decision. ( not sure if you were serious or not ) ?

Too thin and nothing to keep it from slinging off the bar

X2. Green BL seems to cut easily whereas some of the dead stuff i cut is like concrete. Sometimes i forget what the saw cut on a prior outing and i wonder why its dull and then "oh yeah, i cut dead BL"

When I was using that aggressive grind on BL it sure did feel like a jackhammer sometimes :)

This is still pretty green. It has been down a little over a year. I just got permission, so I think I am going to go for it this afternoon.

The 361 i bought from you is my favorite saw for green BL it seems. 22' & 18" bars. I killed the 18" chain with you aggressive grind on the 500i when it bound and threw the chain. Put it back on and thrown again. Checked it out and badly bent the chain! :headbang: Still had lots of meat.

Didn’t quite get any wood home today.. to hot to finish the job. Saw was great, though I think I could have used another two inches of bar...
I first cut started to pinch and the deeper one is where I think I need just a little more. Any tips for getting those rounds out? They are pretty well jammed.

Would something like this work from Am-a-sawin?

Wedge the top after you start the cut and pound - em - in
A cant hook to turn it over might help as well. As you posted above.
A cant hook better for turning logs and a peavy might be better for a log pile. Cant hook has better bight for something like that.

    Thats some big wood.

Looks like a lot for that saw?

Weird. I put a 20” bar on the 462 yesterday morning. First cut I went a tad too deep, pinched the chain and threw it off near the tip. Maybe Stihls don’t like shorty bars?
On the bright side all three saws fired right up with old gas. One of my 550’s even spent the winter outside under the porch roof. It was a winter of everything fend for itself, you’re on your own LOL

Try tapping a steel splitting wedge into the completed cut. You can use a 2x4 or long crow bar to pry it lose from underneath if you dont have a cant hook or peavey to roll it. Use the bar or something to clear under the round with the incomplete cut so you wont hit dirt. Can you buck more rounds to free it up?

I did the same first (and only) time i put the 18" bar on the 500i. I had considered asking if the shorter bars are okay for a higher CC saw. Ive run the 460 wearing a 20" bar without issue. Was it a new chain and stretching out Joe?

The saw did well with the 20” bar and full skip
I don’t have a lot of room to work with.. only two or three rounds. One more cut to be made but I doubt that will loosen it up.

Thats a peavey (point on tip) you'd need a cant kook. The point is on side. Can you wedge something under it and pry it up. Make like a seesaw. Looks like there is room. Pry up, kerf opens and stick a plastic/wood wedge to hold it open, finish cut.

Yup. The only issue with your situation is the log isnt free to roll or is it?

I think it is real close to rolling, but not sure if I got all the way through. I can roll some of the “spoken for” rounds out of the way to get a little more wiggle room. There is that one more cut to make with a wedge.
