Nice fir, but I want to see more pics of that toyota loaded with it! I walk my dog at a county park down the road and they've had some nice firs fall or get removed. But they process them into firewood bundles to sell to campers. I recently deleted pics of my dog standing on some of the big rounds.
BUZZ Benton back 25/30 years ago I had a girlfriend who lived in Cottage Grove, we camped at the lake a few times that's why I recognized it. That's awsome that you get to cut those nice tall firs so close to home and on flat ground!
As you mention it, I have processed a number of trees cut by my Tree Service Friend that were slipping bark at the top and sappy and fresh at the butt. The tops were almost ready to burn! In your first picture the tree/log appeared totally fresh and green instead of just a bit rotten. (There may be a metaphor for what people seem here also!) None the less, lots of great firewood and activity!
Hey Bob, Thank your Wife for the cookies, they’re Great, I’ll have to get home before I try the rolls, those might get shared with my Wife, but no promises about the cookies getting all the way home I enjoyed meeting you in person, you have a Beautiful piece of property there Doug
My first ever experience meeting another Firewood Hoarder's Club Member - I always figured FHC was a nice group of people. Yep! We all share some good commonalities, a strong work ethic, a love of the outdoors, a willingness to make things a little nicer for others. Doug's all that. My wife said "You two could be brothers." and yeah, we probably are just about two peas in a pod. Thanks for the visit and the cinnamon roll Doug! Just have to throw a picture in of yesterday's load from the fir stick. Bark's still falling off midway down the tree... I'm ok with that.
Looks like a nice haul indeed. I seem to recall hearing DF is equal to or better than many hardwoods for heat output making it pretty desirable for you western hoarders. But I can’t stop looking at that old Toyota. A damm shame that the compact pickup is a thing of the past because that’s just the right size for getting to a lot of the wood I have access to. Now a Tacoma is the size of the first-gen Tundra and costs 40k+.
As far as the poll goes, I would Love to have a better MIX, but I don’t think that I would want 100% Hardwood. I don’t know of any better kindling than Cedar, and our Conifers season FAST, and typically leave very little ash. We were given some very well seasoned Walnut, I swear that Schitt left more ash than the wood that I put into the stove. Burning the Walnut 24/7 I was lucky to get 2 days between cleaning ash out of the stove, with our conifers, I rarely clean the stove in less than 2 Weeks Processing? I Love bucking them telephone poles, yep some hardwoods are relatively straight, some I have seen, I might just walk away from. Seasoning? We bought our home in May of 2016, in June my Wife found an ad on CL for Free firewood. Marty had 5 Large (30”+ DBH) Norway Spruce fell, we CSS that, got a bit over 6 cords, by Late October, early November that Spruce was stove ready, no 2 years seasoning like I often read as recommended for Oak Yeah, I would like a better mix, but I sure wouldn’t want to only have access to hardwood, our Conifers heat our Home just fine Doug
Boy did I find that out , like I said before, for us “Hardwood “ is wood that is either Too Faaaaar from the Trailer, or Down Hill from the Trailer, quite often BOTH , so Iwas Grinning when I loaded up that walnut, not so much when I was shoveling OUT Dayumed near as much Ash out of the stove, as firewood that went into the stove. A better mix would be Great, but if I could only have all Hardwood, or all Conifers, I would stick with the Conifers, especially D Fir, it even makes Good kindling in a pinch, but Cedar is still the Kindling KING in my experience Doug hey Jason, if you could ONLY have D Fir, or ELM, what would it be???
I wish I could cut wood at my local park! The parks dept will make a lot of campfire wood out of this one.
