Cut and split a bitter hickory that was dying in front of the house by our driveway. It will go over by the big barn to dry for the '23-'24 heating season.
basswood/ linden. Related to poplar and birch. When burned, smelled like incense. when cut fresh, it smells like Pepsi (not Coke)......I'm serious
Roadkill firewood lol. I'm gonna use that term when I find wood at the side of the road. Road kill is why I started learning trees. So much in my city to run into.
Couldn't get the truck in where I was scrounging today but did get 8 (ATV) trailer loads. That's gotta count for something! 2 red maple trees, 1 beech tree, 1 white birch tree, and 1 unknown (thought it was silver maple however I've never seen a silver maple with a dark center).
I was finally able to get back to the 2 Ash trees I cut from the creek bank, they have been bucked up since I drug them out. I tossed the smaller pieces in by hand & used my brothers skid loader & grapple to load the rest.
The road up to a friends timber sale was still solid this morning. I was able to get 62, 9' long fence posts. And some firewood. It came to right at 1 cord. I wanted to get more but the sun was beating on the road and I didn't want to make any ruts on the 4 to 5 mile trip down to the main line.
Got a load of Elm & a bit of Cherry for campfire wood, the Cherry is starting to get punky in the middle.
Went up and got 70+ 9' fence posts today. My last trip up there this season. Road was getting too soft by the time I was loaded.
I guess I mis counted. I unloaded them this morning @ the homestead and came up with 70 great to OK ones and 7 that are a bit small on the small end. But those will make good devider ect posts. That gives me 139 in total. I think I can build a fence with that amount.
I've seen dark silver maple but thats like 5 times more distinct. different pattern to the discoloration too
