I've got a white pine which is about 95 to 100' high. It's about 34" @ the base, and has about a 6 degree lean right over my shed. It started with a sudden death syndrome this year and about 60% of the top has turned brown and dead. There ain't no way I'm trying this one. Had 4 tree services in and all said it is a definite "crane job". Cheapest price I have so far is $900. to put it on the ground in sections. A shame the white pine lumber market is in the toilet here as there are @ least 3 - 16' logs that would make really nice lumber. I don't have a need for or a storage place to keep it if I had it processed. Lots of shoulder season wood about to come for the next couple of years..............
It's a tough one, one way or the other it has to come down. A 34" base is a good size tree, your gonna get alo tof shoulder wood out of that. There are a few mills out this way that would take the lumber for pennies but will not provide pickup. Keep it, or have a portable mill come in and process it at your house.
Sounds like a good price. Around here it costs about $3000 for a crane. Just having the brush disappear into a chipper is worth something.
Sounds like a good price to me as well. I have a 65' or so pine that a guy wanted $500 just to chip. That's me putting it on the ground, limbing and putting into a nice pile to pull up to and pull from. Plus I keep the chips.
We had some big pines along the old farm's drive. I can relate. They're monster trees. Sorry you'll have to pay to have it taken down but you'll be glad you did. Oh yeah, Terry's right, gotta get some pics of the ole giant coming down. Good luck.
Call your insurance company. Maybe they'll chip in a few hundred. ? ? It will come down eventually, just not knowing when, is the scary part. Pay a little now or a lot later. Other option is to move the shed, what would that cost ?
Unless its a veneer log it doesnt matter the market no one will pay you for a single yard tree. As a forester I her this question all the time. Even a dozen of them are worthless. At least around here?
I asked my insurance company if they'd consider that, even if it was only 25%. They said it was my responsibility to maintain the property in a safe manner and 'remove all potential hazards'. I asked if I would get a discount for taking care of a problem before it became a problem. They said no. It was worth a try. I paid $600 to have two spruce trees dropped, brush chipped and stumps ground (they left the wood). Only $100 more than the deductible would be had the tree wiped my pole barn out.
That's not too far off on the price Rotti. I'd probably do it a little cheaper being you are a good friend, plus I wouldn't have the crane there, I'd piece it down in small sections and lower it to the ground with ropes........ Either way, if that top is dying out, don't wait too long or else it's gonna snap and cause real problems...
And a good chan e its a veneer tree. But even if its for lumber that stuff is CRAZY price. Not just cheap pine boards which are not really cheap anymore. Around here you really needs 40 loads to interest most loggers which amounts to around 10 acres of decent stocked trees.. if you want to cut a few acres of trees here most just laugh. And if you find someone to pay you for a few acres you won't get much for it.
As many have said, that's the right call. For what it's worth, that's a good price without a crane out here in the PacNW for similar height Doug Firs. A friend of ours recently got a quote to take down a ~125foot doug fir next to their house--$1400.
Definitely gonna take er' down. The shed is about 30 x 30.. It would really make a mess if it came down. As someone had mentioned, the price is the deductible anyway.
