A guy I know brought this motor over its a power washer motor. The pump is bad the tag says so, supposedly it runs good. I've got a 22 ton splitter, that is a vertical shaft splitter, but my motor needs replaced. What do you all think about trading out the power washer motor for my motor. Looks like a Honda clone, maybe Predator 6.5 hp. Did you remove the air filter or was it brought to you like that? If it won’t start, check the oil. If it still won’t start, the low oil sending unit is possibly the cause. Unplug the yellow wires by the kill switch and try it
It was brought too me with the air filter removed it was cracked but, had the foam filter in the housing. , the guy who gave it to the guy i know, said, the motor runs.
Never owned one myself, but I’ve heard good reviews on the Predator. If I had a wood splitter in need of a motor I wouldn’t hesitate to use one
Here's some GOOD NEWS, the guy who the Pwasher was given to, just brought it back by my place, choked it, pulled it though one time, and it fired right up runs like a cat, nice and smooth, quiet as all get out. Gettin excited about this motor!!
Going from vertical to horizontal will require a bit of effort. But If’n you’re kinda handy and have some equipment ( welder, drill press, torch, etc.) its definitely doable
Switching over is going to be a fair amount of work. For the time and effort you are going to have to put into it you might want to think about just getting a replacement engine. Harbor freight does make a vertical shaft preditor motor. For the price they are hard to beat.
That motor will most likely have a tapered shaft, typical for power washers and generators, this requires machining the shaft to adapt to a hydraulic pump.
My old splitter was a vertical shaft B&Stratton , it had a straight shaft with a standard Love-Joy coupler and the pump bolted directly to the base that the motor mounts on top of. This is what the Predator shows for a shaft. Worst case you might need a different coupler on the motor side depending on original shaft size. You can purchase just one half if it is a Love-Joy. Keyway 3/16 in. Shaft length (in.) 3.2 in. / 80.2 mm Shaft Diameter 7/8 in. (22.2mm) Currently shows at $159.00
I personally wouldn't screw around going from vertical to horizontal configuration. For the couple hundred dollars that the direct fit motor costs I'd just bolt a new one & go.
Clone of a clone. While it may not say predator on it, there's lots of congress out there. I have a predator on my old didier splitter. Best $100 spent ever. You'd need to check the output shaft to see if it is the same size as what you have in the splitter. You might get lucky, or you might need to buy some lovejoy coupler parts, but it can be made to work, even if the shaft sizes are different. Edit, I see your splitter needs a vertical shaft. That will make more work
You will need something like this. When my B&S dies it will get a horizontal shaft Honda clone of some sort. I dont care for the pump hanging down the way it does.
