So that's what they look like....

Most I see are straight and not gnarly like that specimen. Wouldn't be a fan if they were all like that one.

 

You shouldn't have posted the 2nd an 3rd trees... buZZsaw BRAD just used that to triangulate the location...and now their days are numbered...

 

I was able to get pics of the one i mentioned. By itself in the yard and the closest BL across the street.

 

Those look like the elm here in South Dakota...... I might be mistaking them..

 

So what have I got here then? When it is first split its very dark in color, but with 3 days it is all one color. Seems to dry out very quickly. I thought it was Red Elm. Sure splits lit elm, very stringy.

 

There's BL all over the place here. Not hoarding while on vacation.

I spotted some laying dead.

There's a place here that have inverted BL trunks. Small root ball at the top. They are being used as light poles. Ill get pics of them.

It DOES resemble black locust a bit, but the colors are a little off beyond regional variation and the bark is too. The young shoots coming off those rounds say something other than BL. Also, locust doesn't split stringy either. Green or dead, it's a clean split. I'm going with red elm myself.

 

Reminds me of sassafras, if not BL.

Tbe color of the bark against the sapwood is what made me think sassy.

Mike i was wondering if you could stop and ask if i can come and cut these up for firewood. Give me something to do on vacation! I hate to see them just laying around going to waste!

 

I do believe they would frown upon having those trees felled. They border a golf course.

 

I was looking at the downed barkless logs!

 

Funny....Brads gotta take pics from inside the truck to maintain a low pro....if they ever saw him walking around scouting their tree, we'd hear shotguns being racked, and that sound they play in westerns when theres fixin to be a fight.....
