Locust Fix, to keep the mania fed. Casually checked Craigslist this afternoon under the infamous FREE section. Ooooh free wood a mile and a half from me. Lemme go see what’s up. Old brick apartment building downtown, the kind with little storefronts down below. I didn’t even know this part of town had any trees to be honest. Pulled out back and saw a lot more than what I was expecting. A couple large Tree of Heaven, a few Black Locust and a little bit of Elm thrown in, some dead without bark, some fresh cut. Landlord came out to chat with me. I guess last year some trees fell on a tenant’s car, he was liable... so he had most of the hill out back cut down. Told me to take as much as I want (quit twisting my arm will you?!) I’ll get all the locust and elm anyway, we’ll see about the tree of heaven.
Oh I'm thinking about it... There's way more there than pictured. Old dead/barkless locust I plan on grabbing, more elm too. The landlord was nice and almost jumping up and down when he saw me loading up my truck. It's that tree of heaven I'm not too keen on though. As it is I have enough shoulder wood to burn nonstop for an entire season if I wanted to. I'll probably buck on site and take one load of TOH anyway. I don't want to write it off completely without trying it first...

Yeah, I was definitely due for a full load of BL. Funny how I PM'd you last night almost complaining that all the good scores are always down by you One load for today (I had to grab it quick on my way to work) and I plan on going back tomorrow and Wednesday. The landlord actually encouraged me to use my saw, which I'll happily do. The way he had everything cut and his attitude in general, I got the impression he wanted to put minimal effort into dealing with these trees. Fine by me, I'll get the bulk of it off his property and he can deal with the rest.

That's some good looking wood there. Drive right up and roll them downhill to your truck. No danger in falling them and a lot of the bark is gone. What's not to like? Hell, I'd take the tree of heaven just to thank the guy.
I try not to overload my little Colorado, but today it was squatting. What I need to do is buy a 4 x 8 trailer and stop making my truck work so hard. I had to drive it 30 miles one way to work loaded up like this and I could definitely feel it on the highway.
Do you have much Tree of Heaven in your area? It's pretty prolific down here. Since reaching the 3 year plan admittedly I'm becoming something of a wood snob, and would rather stop taking anything and everything which was last year's M.O. for me.
I’d take it all, even the tree of heaven. Do a good job and maybe you will get called back in the future.
That may not be a bad idea. There’s a good chance the owner has several properties in town and might have a need to offload wood in the future. If not, he may know someone looking to do so. Although I never committed to taking everything, if I at least make a sizable dent in the mess he has I’m sure he’ll be happy enough.
You came into a good one there Eric. Taking that lesser wood could be one way of thanking the man. Also a token gift should be in order just because we try to be nice guys who appreciate this sort of thing. I most times find that the more you give, the more you receive. And not necessarily receive from the one you gave to but the receiving often come from unexpected sources.
And buddies that own properties in town...I know here locally the landlords all know each other, and talk...
