This is at the State Park, a tree service took it down. I initially thought it was Ash till I got up to it. I believe it’s Maple but I have never seen borers/beatles work on Maple. Maybe those are Woodpecker hole but they look quit similar to the bark beetle holes in a lot of the pines around here. The wood is solid so I’m not sure what the woodpeckers would be after.

Here’s a pic of the leaves I found around it. It cuts like butter & has no distinctive smell. Everything else that I can see close by is Ash, Pine or 1 Cottonwood.

Almost looks like woodpecker damage to me...
End grain doesn’t look right for pignut (at least pignut here, but I see how the bark could be an indicator).
Popple or aspen maybe? Never really dealt with either, so not much help.
Probably burn gooder after drying tho.

Looks like a poplar variant but could be basswood too. Not Maple. Maple has opposite branching. Those look like woodpecker holes. I actually think the woodpeckers practice some kind of farming near me. Damage the trees, wait for insect infection, harvest the insects.

inden/basswood/poplar probably all fall in the same category for most folks.

It fit all the criteria except growing range but being it’s a state park that’s not out of the realm of possibility. I guess I have a nice bunch of fire pit wood now, I post a picture in loaded trucks thread.

Linden and basswood are the same here. We have the big leaf version. Leaves are about 8” across

I think its basswood as well. Rounds would be lighter than normal. Dries fast and feather light. Ive seen the same sapsucker/woodpecker damage too. Ill look for pics

Well I'd say buZZsaw BRAD nailed it! Good for campfire or a quick hot shoulder season fire.

Yes, all the ones I have sure seem like something really nice. Then you cut into it. It's still great SS wood and it splits easily and dries quickly.

Yes it is Basswood and the holes are typical of the Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker.
