Had the annual family low country boil tonight. It's always a big hit, a few turkey fryers with seasonings and throw in potatoes, onions, carrots, corn, kielbasa, and shrimp. This year we also marinated shrimp and grilled them over mulberry. Wow those were awesome, really the whole meal was great. We loaded up the truck with everything's and headed out, normally do it at my house but had a chance for rain so we moved it to my uncles place with a pavilion. Had 50lb of shrimp and 50lb of kielbasa, and lots of veggies. Ended up with about 90 people show up, had a great time and the weather held out for us.
Wow, that looks crazy good! I love a good low country boil! It looks like a great feast and awesome time with family.
low country boil ? a term I haven't heard before. Here we would call it a family potluck or picnic or gathering. I also had to Google kielbasa as I haven't heard of that before. FHC broadens my horizons again!!!
Low country (SE South Carolina Coast) boil is a term for a certain meal. In other parts of the country it is referred to as a "boil". The basics are always corn, sausage, potatoes, strong spicy seasonings, and shrimp. Other parts of the country will add or substitute crawfish (Western Gulf), crab (Mid Coast and Western Gulf), and/or lobster (NE). Andouille sausage is commonly used around the Gulf. You haven't heard of Kielbasa? Girl, you should come to the Great Lakes. There are entire sections of the refrigerated meat departments set aside for sausages only. Not sure if you have heard of this one...Bull & Oyster Roast. Popular throughout Maryland.
Sorry for the drift, Swags. WW, here is a suggestion. Try beer braised kielbasa & kraut on a bun. Others can chime in, but here many people substitute sausages (many homemade) in place of hot dogs.
Try the fresh kraut. Can be found in the refrigerator section at the market. Better and the probiotics are not killed off like the canned stuff. Really good.
Well, thanks for the info. This is great, learning about food styles everywhere. Swags, your party looked like a good time was had by all.
I believe the term comes form the south, SC (low country). The name changes in different regions. Cookout here would commonly be a burger/hot dog on the grill/fire event.
Awesome turnout! That would be a crawfish boil here. Cookout would be burgers and the like. BBQ would be low and slow brisket, ribs.
