I have a small mill, the SM-16 by hudson. I got it years ago to build a cabin, but it never happened. I have milled a little wood with it, but a lot of my current logs are too big, or the mill is too small. I can widen it without too much trouble, but then I have a stack of blades that are the wrong size. Can I cut and weld them or would I need to get different blades? I don't know if I could sell it and buy a bigger one.
I am not sure if you could section blades or not I would think it is possible as long as you could get them lined up correctly but I would wonder about flexibility with 2 weld joints and the time you would invest in doing it blades are not really that expensive
I would not splice your blades. I've only broken 2 blades and both were at the splice. As for the mill they are so many manufactures offering wide models and the demand for small homeowner mills. I don't know if it would be worth the time and effort. I would worry about tracking issues and stress on the motor. Hope this helps.
Tracking of the blade with multiple welds will become an issue. Blade breaking at weld is generally an annealing of the weld area issue. From what I hear most of the mill MFG are backed up due to orders and difficulties with supplies due to the pandemic. One of my customers said Wood miser was backed up on sharpening bands 6 mo. and up to a year on mills.
