Procured this dead BL blowover back in January and been waiting for snow to melt to get at it. buzz-saw gave me a hand loading. 13" DBH tree (without bark) plus other downed skinnies and some storm clean up sections buried in the leaves. Good load again. More smalls than usual but dead BL is not that easy to come by around here. Nice day here. Short sleeves all afternoon.
I was jones n’ bad to get out today with the weather but other stuff to do. Went for a walk in the woods with my son. Celebrated mother in laws birthday which ended up being a half day ordeal, but it ended up being fine. Good day of rest preparing to get after it tomorrow! Should be my last week before I become a splitting madman

No sarcasm this time! BL is a scarce tree. Dead downed even scarcer let alone finding/procuring it. In this case i scored a bunch of tree service BL back in January and spotted this when i finished. Homeowner gave me the okay when i was ready.
I am with you on that . Can't wait to get splitting , my piles have been getting bigger and I am ready to go. Now that the weather has finally gotten better here and ground isn't a mud pit it's time to get after it. Not sure if I will be able to get going this week depending on work schedule if not this upcoming weekend is in the plans. Get out and enjoy spring !!
Getting scarcer by the day I have wondered if locust would be a good tree to promote for land management. It is nitrogen fixing, so it grows fast and rapidly sequesters carbon. The lumber is like natural pressure treated wood as far as rot resistance. And all the left over or bendy pieces could be used for firewood. Win/win/win, right?
I wish i hadnt used the "scarce" quote. And yes with me hoarding it is getting scarcer. Groves of it here and there and usually a downed tree or top within. With locust mania ive gotten really good at spotting it regardless of the time of year. Whether i can procure the score is another thing. Two storms last August (Isaias & tornado) have really helped my hoarding efforts. I couldnt agree with you more. It is an amazing tree. I did some research and learned of what you stated. Why it can grow in poor soil conditions. Im not sure but it may be "farmed". Companies do sell BL lumber. Found them online. Maybe JB Sawman can shed more light on this as he mills BL.
Processed most of the load yesterday. Some splitting to do yet. It'll get moved when the backyard is dry enough as its too muddy. The heavier and wetter splits i put separate as they may not be ready next season. Stacked next to some TOH from the day before.
