I am in a bit of a scramble to get more wood cut, to stay out of my stack for next season. Had a tree top blowdown that needed cut and cleared. Six in at the largest diameter. Lo and behold, I see this blow down, close by. Good work area. I think it may be a maple. Maybe 14 inches at the base. I already did some limb pruning and put it in the boiler tonight. Hoping this is a month of burning with the milder temperatures. I have plenty of trees, in the deeper woods. To have this close at hand is a great windfall. Yuk yuk. I will post on this thread as the CSS proceeds.
This is a little further into the back woods. Fifteen foot big log that split while the loggers dragged it. Pushed out of the way, right off the log path. Doesn’t relate a to the post, but hate to let a good bragging log picture go unseen.
Mag Craft Yes, I have an outdoor boiler. I will mix a bit of high moisture with what I had stacked and drying last Spring. Trying to get that three year accumulation going, but fighting to keep out of my final stack. I will shut down the boiler early before.
I'm jealous. We still have a lot of snow on the ground and there is no way I am going to try to get any wood cut now. Snow is melting so footing in the woods is not going to be good
Tonight I dragged a branch from the blowdown and did a csB. Cut it, split it, and left it in the Bannon by the boiler. No reason to remove it to stack it, to move once more into the boiler.
Looks like a great day of cutting with some beautiful weather to boot! I’ve seen those trailers before online. You been pretty happy with it?
Haftacut yes the Bannon has been good. My neighbor who has a boiler bought one after I did. I made a quick YouTube video on it, because there weren’t any other. Easy to find. the weak point is the tires. They lose air and tube replacement is to get as close as possible. They are an odd Chinese size. Good thing is, with 8 tires, you don’t need all of them aired to operate. Been looking into getting them fluid filled. welds have held up, and axles are strong. I can haul enough that my Mule will run out of power on a good grade. The tool holders and saw presses are very useful.
Dropped the upper trunk and cut it in half. Called it a night. Will return with the big saw and do the rounds. The lower trunk is pretty fat at the bottom. Will likely cut it from top down until I don’t want to mess with it.
Last night I managed to get my tractor stuck, when I attempted to give the trunks a lift. After work I cut both trunks up enough to go forward. I don’t trust the ground to drive through the woods. Going to give it a couple days of sun. Brother is going to help with his tractor this weekend. Saws were working it tonight. All will be ready for the splitter tomorrow.
Pics load backwards in order, but..... discovered a good size beech across my fence. I limbed a lot of it with my new battery power saw. Light and does a good job. I was cutting up to six inch branches with t. What is in the top picture is the point where I cleared both sides of the fence to make replacement easy. What is left will be cut by the big Husqvarna in the near future. I hope to get it split a Hf A beautiful day to be in the woods. On the way back I came across some oak and ash that I cut and split two seasons ago. About half a rick to get through the last of the burning season. The tree closer y the house is still waiting for dry ground. It will add a lot to the stacks for the future.
Those are sure some big ones! Lot of wood in those two trees, and two of my favorite species to burn! How long do you think each has been down?
Haftacut , That actually is one tree. My angle couldn’t get the base of it . It has been down a short time, because I would have seen it during scouting for wood. I first spied it earlier this week from a few hundred yards away. Edit: Realized you were referring to each location. Neither have been down long. The one close to house I could have only been down a few days, as it is you the lane from upper and lower pasture there are some other recent blow downs in my woods, but they are in too treacherous terrain to do anything with. I was reluctant to mess with making firewood from it, but jumped onto the reference page here. Pretty high BTU, and only a few months to season? Actually pretty awesome stuff. Makes great fireplace wood too. I will split the thinner limbs for my fireplace wood stacks, with the sugar maples I find.
You have some nice firewood Sourwood , how much total firewood do you think you have down in all the pictures?
thewoodlands I think I mat get a couple cords from them. They will go onto the holz hausen. I try to cut at 2 feet. When my rounds are too short, they go into the fireplace dedicated pile, in the traditional face cord/ rick stack. fireplace burning tonight cause the mood struck me.
Another great day. Headed to the beech job, but spied a much neglected cherry that borders my creek. I diverted to it and cut some fireplace wood. Moisture content was under 6 on some bark less branches. Under 20 for the larger stuff. Unfortunately I had left it laying so long, one good section was too punky to salvage. Tomorrow I hope to take the tractor down and move the trunk away from the creek to get more cut up. Should have taken some creek pics for you all. went into another part of the woods to collect ash slits from two years ago. The bed of the Mule was brimming went I left, and there is some split maple that needs gotten. Should be enough to the end of the Spring burning season. made it back to the beech and cut up some 4 to 8 inch branches to clear the work area. Collected those and some larger rounds. Short stuff was put on the Rick pile fr ‘22 or ‘23 fireplace season. Bigger are going to the round stack.
