have over 60 cord split/stacked? I know those who sell it obviously do, but I'm interested in hearing from those who simply cut wood to solely heat their homes with and -not- to sell. I think I'll end up with close to 65 cord by the time I get what I cut this winter split/stacked. I did end up selling 5 cord last spring to a local and a fellow forum member to help him get ahead, otherwise I would be pushing 70 cord.

Back in early '14 is when I had the idea of moving on from wasting wood in a conventional fireplace trying to keep the LP thermostat from calling for heat. We probably had 10-15 cord of oak left of the stuff we processed when some straight line winds came though our area and wiped out a fair number of larger oak trees. The thought of continuing to waste that good wood in a conventional fireplace did not sit well with me and thought it was the perfect time to make the switch to a wood furnace. I was able to talk the other half into it, but it was not easy. :picard: Placed the order for one in early '14. I know what I had on hand was seasoned for a couple years and was not ideal, but I knew it would work and I knew I had to get ahead as I originally wanted to be on the 5 year plan. The longer time went on, the better the wood situation would be IF I got to work. I pretty much started cutting that spring. So fast forward to today, I've burned a total of roughly 30 cord to date over the 7 winters I've had the wood furnace, sold 5 cord and now have a surplus of pushing 65 cord. :D

I'm a one man show. I do all my cutting in winter. I go out for a few hours on weekends and cut standing dead or storm damaged trees mainly from December through the end of February. I have my ATV "winter outfitted" with everything I need and also have a Polar HD1500 ATV trailer. Once I have them bucked up I halve/quarter the larger rounds with an Isocore and I then haul everything back to a pile. Once March rolls around is when I typically start to split/stack with a hydro. I'm usually done splitting in a couple weeks after I start as I go out after work during the week and split a couple ATV trailer loads worth a day. I split till the ATV trailer is full and then I stack......repeat. Then on weekends I spend a bit more time. Splitting goes fast for me, but it's the stacking which is the time consuming part. I only want to do it once, so I try to take my time so I don't have to re-stack down the road.

Anyway, just curious as to what others have for wood?

I may have 16 cords on hand now and I hope to bring it up to 20 cords by next fall. When one is north of 70:BrianK::BrianK:you can't set goals that are too ambitious:whistle:

I can only wish! I burn 10+ cords a year in the OWB, makes it harder to get ahead, but sure beats paying a LP bill.

I have nowhere near that amount, but I do have close to 30 face cords. It is my therapy. I give a few cords away every season. It is mostly stored on my friend's land (he has the same obsession as I). I keep about 4-5 face cords at my place, the rest at his place. I did have to go for a restocking run a month ago. Here are a few photos of the stash taken last year:

A wise man once told me that you never have enough firewood. Its too hard to predict what the next year will bring ie be it a really hard winter or maybe an unexpected health issue, surgery to name a few.

Wow! 60 cords is unfathomable for me. I started last summer with less then half a cord left over from the previous winter. But started cutting, splitting and hauling wood in July, I guess. I have burnt probably 3.5 to maybe 4 cords this winter, so far. And I probably have 7-8 cords split and stacked, and another 5 or 6 cords available, in the form of dropped trees and logs, to get ahead of the sap rising and maybe a cord maybe two, that is cut up and split, laying around on the farm, that I need to haul in and stack. So, I am gaining. I think I am ahead 2 years on my stacks, and will be 4 or 5 years by fall, but that will still be less then 25 cords if I get that far.

I have been trying to hang at around 20 to 22 cords and that is plenty when I burn 3 to 4 per year

I try to keep 15 to 20 on hand, right now I probably have 14/15. Most I’ve ever had on hand was about 25 but that was a bit much. I have zero interest in 60 cords. To many other things going one to deal with that. :)

I burn 4-5 a year...but I'd rather make use out of the dead stuff rather than letting it rot. Doesn't do anybody any good that way. :) Good well seasoned wood should also be able to fetch good $$$ from those in the know if I ever have to sell some again. I'll just need to time it with higher LP prices. :D

I got wiped out this year. I'm at about 5 cord of good dry wood ss. I've 20+ of standing dead here in log form & some split. I have another 20 cord coming on a grapple load & we'll cut & haul every Saturday till it gets really hot. I hope to be around 100 cord processed by fall. Hit a huge Ash score about 4 miles from home, so that'll make some good burning & selling.

That’s a lot of wood - how many seasons of burning is that for you? I’ve got 17 cords which is ~4 years worth for me.

I think I may have about 50 css. Maybe another 25 in log length waiting to get processed. An easy another 25 waiting in the woods to come home. Like you it’s just a therapy for me. Something to do. I feed three houses so it’s not as much as one may think.
Have t had the chance to touch a saw or splitter since early December. Itching to get back to work where I’m the only boss and there’s no rules. IE do what I want when I want.
It’s good to get ahead. That cushion becomes more important the older you get.
Considering selling some. Time will tell if I keep up the old pace there would be extra to get rid of. Otherwise it’s worth more as fuel savings than cash.

I honestly don't know for sure how much I have on hand right now but figure I still have about enough for 3 years of heat. The most I've ever had on hand was between 20 and 30 cord (maybe it was 27?), It was a good feeling when I got that much stacked.

I have burned a little over 30 cord over 7 seasons, so............lots!

Next season I'll be burning 6-7 year old stuff (stacked in spring '15). This past season I burned the same aged stuff and it was terrific (stacked fall of '14).

Impressive. I still hope to be able to be doing this when I am that age. Like you mentioned though, it will be at a much slower pace.

In reality, I could process 2 cord a year starting now (assuming I burn 4.5 cord a year) and I wouldn't run out of wood till I am 75. I am currently 49.

JR was nice enough to sell me 5 cords to get me going :) Thanks Bud!! It burns fantastic. :) Last summer, not counting the 5 cords purchased, I CSS 11 cords, putting me at 16 at the start of last years season. I've probably got 3-4 cords on the ground right now on the property that needs to be bucked and split (all dead standing oak). I've got room to make one more "bay" to hold wood, which is three cords worth. So this year I need to get about 7-8 cords total to fill up all my bays and replace what I burned this year. Depending on how high I make my stacks, close 20 cords total, which puts me in a 4-5 year rotation. I think. :)

I could, in theory, leave wood out at the new place as well, but leaving CSS wood on an unattended 11 acres on with good road access I think might be to tempting of a target.

Not me, I have about 10 cord split and stacked and another 5 or 6 in logs. Once it’s all processed it will get me on the three year plan. Then I’ll focus on processing some dead stuff on the property. I have no desire to sell firewood so any more than that is probly not going to happen.

I don't have that much on hand. I do have next year's wood all stacked in the center bay of my shed. That's 5 cords. I also have about another 1.5 -2 cords stacked in the shed in other bays and on my patio. There is currently about a cord left from this year's wood, that the remainder of this year's burning will get stacked into the 2022-23 bay. I suspect there will be a good half cord leftover.

In 2 or 3 weekends, the remaining ash trees on my property will be felled, and those with the leftovers from this year we'll probably fill the 2022-23 season bay. This spring I'll cut more on my wood lot. There's easily 8-10 cords there in elm, ash, and cherry that is dead and needs to be felled.

After that, there's plenty on my buddy's land to cut.

Ideally, I will have all 3 bays of my shed filled, so 15 cord or 3+ years worth, plus another couple cords cut split and stacked in the woods, getting some pre seasoning before it gets into the shed.

I have somewhere around 15-20 cord c/s/s. But I also supply my parents with wood so that has typically been 3-5 cords/season.

I wish! 60 cords would put me on the 12 year plan.
If I had room to stack half of that, I would. I am having enough trouble finding flat and open space for 15 cords. I have about 4 cord stacked close to the infiltrator chambers for my waste water. They're not on top but close to them and I was advised best not to have them there. So now I need to move them. :headbang: Too bad Stacks get great sun and wind there.
I have a little over 5 acres and it's mostly 97% woods and 99% hills. I have a nice level space in the woods, could probably get 5+ cords but sun doesn't hit it too well.
