I have been cutting up and hand splitting a bunch of firewood, today, from trees dropped a few days ago to open up a path for a new fence line. I believe I cut up some Hickory, Red Oak, White Oak, Black Locust, Walnut and Elm. I hate Elm, so my litmus test is I cut a round and try to split it with my ax or maul. It it splits fairly easily, I cut it up for firewood, but if it don't split, I figure it's Elm and I leave it in the woods.
3 out of 4 is t bad. Did t comment on the last log because I did t even notice it. Haha. Black gum- throw that crap right back in the woods!
