I have a crazy question, if you are splitting vertical, why not just roll the rounds to the splitter, before you cut them on two, or let the splitter do it? I hate having to flip pieces.
It’s the first time I did it with 30-32” rounds and it made it 10x easier to move and split. I walk them to the platform with an 18” hookaroon. I can’t believe it took me this long to figure out an easier way. 1/2 the weight to wrestle. A new 661 contributed to the new method as well.
Another advantage is that the half is more likely to split clean. With big rounds of Oak they don’t split completely apart so I have to spin the big round until a chunk breaks off and it becomes lighter to work with. My splitter has a big powder coated box tube deck to work with, but it’s still a bear to maneuver big rounds. I try to avoid big logs, but the allure of big straight grained wood is overpowering.
Yep we built a platform for our vertical splitter. I made a chop/pry bar to finish off the split. We all figure out ways to handle it, dont we. Gonna start on those 36-44" post oak rounds next week when my younger than me BIL is up to help.

My lower back has given me pause on that notion, but recently found out from contractor friend we’re on his schedule for serious electrical redo that last bit of April into May. Can’t miss that. Waited long enough.
