This is a first for me, a load of dead barkless Elm. A coworker of mine is taking down several on his property and offered some to me and another fellow hoarder at work. I’ll give it a go! It’s all cut to weird lengths but I’ll get through it. This stuff is dry, dense and makes a nice sound when it gets knocked around. Looking forward to burning it in 2021-2022. I’m almost expecting the wedge on my splitter to mushroom over and break in half instead of the Elm

Unless that was a yard tree it should split good. If not, just let it sit for a while.

I’m wanting elm now because I have a standing offer to trade it for cherry! So I actually gave the post a “like”, which is rare for me (and elm).

Honestly, the few rounds I had leftover from my last run in burnt well in the new wood furnace. My old Baker wood/coal stove it would leave me big ol. bricks of clunkers. I hated that.

Edit: Oh, and pics of the splits... asking for a friend.

Very nice! I love me some standing dead barkless elm

For my OWB I wouldn't even split them, I would just toss them in as is and have a big ol pile of coals in the morning to toss more on!

I inherited a few splits of well seasoned elm this year and as of right now, I can say I like the way it burns. Enough to do whatever it takes to process this, stack it, and go back for more

When an end is checked like that, even in easy splitting wood, it will be harder to split IME. Try putting a round end down so it swells and then try splitting it.
Great score and no messy bark. One thing i hate about harvesting dead wood.

Not being the type to accept defeat over a piece of dead wood, I dragged myself outside to hand split one round just to see for myself. THIRTY THREE whacks later, working it back and forth it yielded to the maul. That’s enough work for me tonight. 1BB0A014-A46C-48E3-94C4-73A0085FAB52.jpeg

Try for 32 on the next one! :axe: No cheating...the round has to be the same size!
I have faith in you Eric. I think you can do it in under 30 whacks!

I was horrified at this one piece! After about 20 whacks it fractured clear across it, then the following blows seemed to do less and less. It just laughed at me and held on to the bitter end.

Looks like it split fairly cleanly though...as Elm goes...

Yeah no nasty fibrous shredded cheese like green elm is notorious for. I’ll plow through it no problem with the splitter. No sense in struggling with this stuff. I work hard enough in several other areas of my life.

If the fellow hoarder doesn’t have hydraulics, you might end up with all of his too:rofl:

Hydros are the only way to get even with elm. Elm has a lot of obscenities to its credit.:headbang::hair::doh::picard:

Haha yeah he’s got a splitter of some sort I heard... maybe it’s a cheapo wimpy sun joe or something in which case I’ll probably end up with all of this. The property owner has several more of these to drop this year too, along with some Ash as well. This could be a really good thing if I can get through it efficiently.
