B.I.L. arranged a nice drop-off of some logs and mulch from a landscaper through Craigslist. I believe it is all red oak, though some of the bark looks a little different.
I’m looking forward to taking my saw over there and helping out. Only a 30-40min drive. 6039EB48-0ADA-48D7-A920-E5A67ABB8029.jpeg

Looks to me like there’s a few black birch logs mixed in with your oak. Nice score!

Wow that looks like a pretty good load of logs. That should amount to some really good firewood.

I was told I would be paid in home brew, but I was thinking of bringing a trunkful of red maple splits and returning with a load of red oak.
I have been encouraging them to get on the three year plan (their new house came with a wood stove), but starting out with a load of red oak will sill leave them “high and dry” for the next two years, or maybe “high and wet.”

That birch may be ready for next year if CSS right away. Make the splits smaller and put in the sun. Birch does dry fast IME.

You could always go find some pine it drys in 6-8 months. Might help them get on a 3 year plan.

I’ve suggested it too, or chip drop since chances are it’d be pine. We are hand splitting, so in that regard red oak is preferable, but I think I could cut out some knots to make pine split easier.

I didn’t get any after shots, and I’ll spare you the action shot that was forwarded. But over a few hours including some time chatting w my sister, I cut up all the logs on the rails in the foreground and that big black birch on the side against the fence.
I left the pile of smaller branches for the BIL to finish up, and I left my saw with him too. He is pretty good about returning things in better shape than he gets them and the saw was free anyways.
He’s watching CL for one of his own. I told him the Red Oak was going to split so easy, that he’ll wonder why he paid for wood, and I was right.

I was wondering if the “black birch” might have been cherry, but it wasn’t orangey in the middle like most of my cherry.
