So the state park about 3 miles away from me is taking down a bunch of Ash & Oaks plus a few other miscellaneous trees. I stopped by to inquire figuring they would tell me to kick rocks but they said cut all you want, you just need a permit.

So this morning I wheeled over
    and got started :
A nice silver maple was right inside the gate so I worked it up.

Next was a mystery tree that I thought was a Slippery Elm but it didn’t cut like Slippery or smell like it. Whatever it is, it’s firewood now.

Next was an Ash tree to finish off the pickup

Then there was a really nice Hickory tree about 24” at the base, for the trailer.

I found 3 nice oaks & a Hickory that was bigger & nicer than the I cut up this morning but with 8” of wet snow on the slope I didn’t figure I could make it in/out.

Here’s the 2nd load of the day, it’s all Ash.

It’s a ‘97. The snow varied from about 2” up to 10”-12” where these trees were.

Yesterday’s haul for a old guy laid up. Had free grandson 17year old labor and traded for two loaves of homemade sourdough and they paid fuel plus some extra. Got a cord to deliver today as well as a half and a guy wants a 1/4 cord.

C5581300-3666-4E53-BFD8-736D1A15304C.jpeg Snuck in a quick load of Locust this morn. before it started snowing/raining. Was from a tree job I drove by last week. I noticed the tree company stacking the wood so I slipped a note in the homeowner’s mailbox.. They got back to me and told me to have at it! That move doesn’t always pan out for me. I find that in some of these suburban neighborhoods I get a lot of mixed reactions from homeowners. Some are happy to get rid of the wood but many seem to be a little creeped out. Oh well, it’s always worth a try!

The wood felt super light to me btw. It’s listed on the btu charts as being heavier than red oak. Did not feel that way to me, maybe it was dead standing and has already dropped some water weight? Any black locust doppelgängers out there that may have duped me?

Fresh cut green BL rounds are lighter in weight than oak (red & white), hickory and sugar maple. Sometimes dead BL rounds can be heavy.
Ive been scrounging so much BL in the recent months i almost forget how HEAVY the others are until a month ago when i scored some fresh cut green sugar maple and a recent oak score. Holy hernias batman!

Its btu rating is higher than red oak, just dont go by the FHC chart. IMO i think BL is ranked too low on it.

Dump truck load of ponderosa pine. Had I not hauled this to my house, it would have went to the landfill.

Green ponderosa isn't exactly premo wood, but it will be ready to burn by oct/Nov. This will be shop wood for my father for next winter. Probably got 1.5 to 2 cords on this load so there is nothing to complain about.
