This is probably a bit of overkill for a living room trash bin, but these figure to never come apart. Red maple sides from pallet wood, compound-mitered and dowel-stitched with hard maple and walnut dowels (I made two). I put the trash bag in, and then the patented Magic Frame drops in so the bag overhang can be tucked inside. Magic Frame - get yours today!
Looks a heck of a lot better than the plastic trash bin I have in my living room that holds paper for recycling! Are you going to stain and/or poly or leave them natural? Either way, they look great!
Thanks bud. I virtually never stain wood, natural colors are mostly beautiful. These two have two coats natural tung which slightly darkens red maple. one more coat in a few days. Funny, I had a plastic trash bin in the living room. Needed a project so I looked around for the ugliest thing that I could replace with wood. The bags hanging over the tops don’t help either. Anyway this is my first effort at dowel stitching. I made it a 45° drill jig with steel bushings, and finally got around to fabricating a universal angle sled for the tablesaw. So a lot got done in my small shop.
When you are working with a beautiful wood there is no need to stain unless trying to match surrounding pieces. Using tung is perfect for those.
That is really nice. I have done dowels or pegs in some projects but never saw them done like that. I like that idea. How does that frame fit in to hold the bag?
