How much wood to store inside the house?

So we have a day's supply of wood handy and warming. The (temporary) wood bin gets filled daily. We have this season's wood under cover just outside the door. When space allows, I'd like to have more than 24 hours' supply for the coldest days. That will be in the form of some under the counter storage. But I'll be tempted to leave the bin up......

So far, I enjoy going out to the pile daily for wood, in a t-shirt, using my log-ox carrier, making a few short trips. (With a nice toasty stove if needed to rewarm). Im not sure if that'll get old at some point....

The stove is in the kitchen, and the outdoor wood pile is 25 feet away and down 3 steps.

So longer term, what do you guys find to be a handy by-the-stove amount of wood?

We have one of those poly tote cages with the front cut off. It holds two rows. If we fill it, it's about a face cord and lasts about a week if it isn't too cold. Right now they are callinf for -27 tonight, so it goes faster. Temps have been below zero for 1-2 weeks.

 

I would put something under your wood bin to stop bits of wood and dirt from getting between your floorboards. You don't want fungus spores from punky wood to start growing there and causing rot.

 

I store about the same amount indoors at any given time. A combination of longer splits that I feed the stove with when I’m home, and shorties for when I’m at work and my wife is keeping up with it. I keep roughly half a face cord directly outside the back door on the deck, then more under the deck as inventory. Basically the wood comes from the stacks in the yard then goes under the deck for a few weeks, then goes on the deck for a bit before going in the house. Probably not the most efficient way of doing it but it works for me. The one plus to my system is I don’t have to worry about constantly keeping a path open to the stacks in the back, just clear the way whenever is convenient for me.

 

personally for me when i usually start burnin in oct it starts out at like 3 to 5 pieces and thenbusually by march apr its at about 15 pieces

 

Up until last month we brought in a cord at a time and stacked it into the stove room/basement. It lasted 6 weeks. We're changing to 1 stack that last 3 weeks now to make better use of the room. Needs some more comfy furniture down there.

 

We have 2 wood boxes, the right side gets 18" splits, it holds about 7-8 5 gal buckets, last a couple days, more if we use chunks and uglies out of the left side box, it will hold 4-5 buckets.

 

We keep enough 18 inch splits for a couple extended fires. We also keep a bin of shorts/uglies/cutoffs. There is a rack on the front porch that holds about a quarter of a cord. We also keep a small assortment in the attached garage to insure we have dry wood.

 

It’s 16’ from my covered porch to the stove. I don’t store wood in house.
I did in the last house, spiders everywhere.

 

I store about a day and a half worth. I have a 2'x4' high rack inside that I fill way past full, and that gives me a little cushion as to what time of day I have to get more wood in. I have a rick cord at the back door, and the rest about 300' away in the woodshed and behind the garage.

 

The entire seasons worth.

 

We get a few spyders.
Last year we got a lot of knats. Turned on a bug light a couple times. Lol. That fixed 'em.

 

I try to keep a week or so's worth in the basement ; sometimes if really bad weather is in the forecast maybe a little more.
Also have a fairly good size plastic storage bin in the corner of the room where the stove is.

I have to keep the lid on this otherwise the dogs think it their buffet and not a buffet for the stove.
Two labs that sometimes think they are beavers and not dogs.

 

I get as much as I can in my basement. Typically I have 3 full cords stacked, though I’ve had as much as 5 in there. 5 doesn’t leave me enough room for other basement stuff I need. I’d say as close as you can get to a seasons worth.

 

Yeah around here I don't get spiders but the dang asian beetles get bad in the house if I store any inside.

Mines stored just outside the door (stoves right by the door) in a small trailer I load once a week.

 

About half a cord worth in the garage. Only bring in the house, wood that will be burned the same day

 

3 weeks worth through the window and which is behind the door.

 

2- 4'x5'x3' boxes. I burn on and off, so wood sits in the boxes longer than normal. Each box holds 4 bucket loads (small JD tractor). I recently added airflow holes at the bottom to help prevent moisture build up over time. Seems to be helping.
