Found in burly section of oak. It was from the bottom where the trunk gave out so bugs, rot, disease, and maybe even a past lightning strike could happened.

    So what is it?

My guess is it’s the reaction wood/response growth of a basal swell

Ive encountered that in oak before. Dont know what it is or what causes it, but cool to look at! Seen it in red maple too just not that dramatic.

It is (I believe) just classified as burl growth.

It was made from firewood. We had gotten several oak logs from a clean up job we did, must have been a heavy leaner, as the pith was WAY off center. It had some crazy curly grain. 1014202054.jpg 1013202019.jpg 0923201639.jpg I gave some pieces to my buddy that had started turning pens, he ripped it down small, dried it in his oven and made several so far.
Here are a couple he first made. We got the one on the left. 6223.jpeg

I think that may be some compression figure. Usually happens below a heavy branch or on something with a heavy lean. The wood fibers get compressed. That may not be exactly what's going on here, but it has a similar effect.

I have found it in branch wood on an oak tree that probably was a couple of hundred years old plus. Tree was 6 foot across at the butt!
