I keep all of my wood at my moms which is where I process all of it. Today was time to restock both wood for the fireplace as well as wood for the owb. First a pickup load of pine, catalpa, gum, locust, hickory, with a touch of oak. Then it was a trip in the dump truck to get a load of junk wood which had too many species to name. Fireplace wood in the garage and boiler wood right next to the boiler. All stacked up and ready for the next round of snow and cold.
Nice that you can get to it with the snow cover. I imagine you produce a boatload of culls with all that wood you process.

I restocked as well. Between the mud, frozen areas and snow, it was a PITA for me too. Wanted to bring another cart load down, but will try early in the morning when the ground is frozen. I need a better system for when the temps are in a freeze - thaw cycle.
If it weren’t for having my owb, I don’t know how I would get rid of all the uglies. It truly is free heat for me. I am very fortunate my brother lets me keep it in his buildings so I don’t have to worry about the weather. What I’m burning is junk wood from summer of 2019
I check/fill twice a day just to keep an eye on things but if I stuff it full of oak, could easily make 36 hours in typical winter weather for around here
I’ve always burned uglies, or as brad termed, nuglies, in my stove during shoulder seasons when I need shorter burn times, but getting to the point where I have more than I can burn up that way. Gonna start burning in my furnace too. It is amazing how much you accumulate when you’re cutting a decent volume of wood!
tell me about it! I have cords of nuglies. Usually the uglies go for top cover or ill stack them as the last row before i top cover. Depends how ugly they are! Any cutting today Haftacut ?
I have not really had to do any restocking as my front porch will hold pretty much a winter's worth of wood, but I started out late last summer fairly low on wood, and started cutting Black Locust mostly and also some dead Pin Oak and Red Oak and a mix of hardwood logs which I cut up. I have burnt most of the Pin Oak, and Red Oak and other hardwoods, and I am now burning more of the Black Locust, but I wanted to let it season till next year if possible. Yesterday, I drove up on a dead suspended black locust that had been in my field for a long time and cut it up and stacked in on the porch. I am burning it now. Even though I just cut it, it's pretty dry, since it was not on the ground. It's been burning good, so I will use it up first. And I have a bunch of short ugly's piled in a corner of the porch, which I always try to burn up, towards spring, to clean the porch off for summer. I hope to avoid taking wood from any of my other stacks until next fall or late summer, when I will restock the porch. But this year, I won't have much restocking to do, as I already have two face cords of recently cut Hackberry stacked on the porch for next fall. It should be ready, since it's supposed to only require 8 months to season. And I hope to keep the Black Locust (about two face cord) also on the porch for next fall and winter. At least this next year, I have a lot more wood cut and stacked seasoning.
That’s more firewood than most produce total! That’s awesome Good use for the stuff that may not bring a premium anyhow.
I hauled 4 face cord I cut earlier in the week yesterday and hauled a pickup load in my truck today. Tomorrow I’ll do some more cutting and hauling. Snow still Limiting your cutting?
Yup. I was tempted yesterday to hit my woods and fell some dead ash, but 10" of wet snow still on the ground stopped me. 6" i wouldve gone for it. We got another 8" today which just ended. Couple deliveries tomorrow will be the extent of my wooding. Glad i did as much as i did in January. Forecast this week not looking good as cold and maybe more snow. Im gonna go nuts! Hoard some wood on my behalf please!
Been there buddy! It sucks when the weather is limiting the hoarding ability. Yesterday, I borrowed my father in laws pickup and he had his snow plow on it, so I plowed a couple passes down the edge of the field I’m working in to make getting back there easier as well as a buffer area I can fell trees that are leaning over the field into. I hate cutting in snow that’s deep enough where you go to pick up the smaller stuff you’ve cut and have to dig through the snow to find them Hopefully a thaw in your future followed by an immediate deep freeze! This is why we make hay when we can, right. Enjoy the down time....you definitely deserve it!
I keep 2 cords reserve on the porch and usually bring a wagon load up from the main stacks for my burning and use the reserve for wet days This year I’ve just been burning directly from the reserve. It was mostly low btu wood anyway so it’s good to get through it and rotate to something better. But I’m down to 1/3 cord on the porch and it has been a terribly wet winter which has made it hard to restock.
