Snow cover has thwarted my hoarding. I had put some dead BL rounds from three weeks ago under cover so headed over and split em up this afternoon. Had some smalls to buck too so gave the new to me 201T some action. Had to shovel my way in. more frozen ants and a good size grub Yielded at least a face cord. Most splits from one tree were around 18% on the MM. Stack with saw on top. These will go this year. These were around 22% and will get a year to dry. Felt good to get some fresh air and exercise.
Good stuff... Got to love it when the wood you harvest is ready to be sold and burned right away. Talk about instant gratification
The cord i sold last will have the second load dropped in three weeks. The back of that dead BL stack has about a face cord of bark on wood. This will take its place. Wondering what the MC is on the other stuff buried in the backyard? Some of that may be ready too.
Hard to beat dead BL for processing. I still have half a cord of BL to split and stack. Too much of a mess right now to deal with.
I almost feel like a chump. I had several 8' lengths of dead BL that was dry as can be, and I ended up using them as runners to stack a few rows of white spruce on My supply of ready-to-burn Locust is dwindling and I keep looking at the spruce piles wondering what was I thinking....
Can you grab any of the dead stuff on Aircraft where we met? How much green BL did you harvest last year? Any sources of dead BL in Bristol? Sounds like you had a few.
Yeah I can grab a couple smaller ones where we met. There's probably enough there to carry me through to mid-March at the rate I've been burning it. I probably have about 2 cords at home of green stuff with bark on still. In Bristol I recently spotted a couple more blow downs that I'm working on permission for. I know where to get more dead stuff close by too but I'm not sure if it'll be dry enough to burn right away. That and with all the snow on the ground it's pretty inaccessible.
Oh but if you can get a cable around it or stab it with log tongs it skids like a dream on a foot of snow. No dirt, just drag & cut.
I did some bucking and splitting today of some red oak that was down on one of my logging trails today. I found some frozen ants too. I knocked them into the solo stove I keep burning when splitting to discard of the detritus.
