Looking for an opinion as to whether I should take this oak tree out. Obviously damaged but anybody here got any thoughts on if it should come down or not. If it WAS to fall to the south it would hit the house for sure. Only part that really sucks is the direction I would have to sell it without a doubt take out a red bud tree I planted last year.
Really don’t have to have an arborists, would be curious on anyone’s opinion if they had one. I am leaning towards felling it. It is very very big oak. Will make 2 years worth of wood for me. It’s a beautiful tree and we love it but it’s starting drop limbs and I have no doubt it’s dying
Pretty difficult to say over the internet based on a few pics. I'd use the ISA (international society of arboriculture) find an arborist tool here: Find an Arborist The site should list arborists in your area and their qualifications. Your going to want to try and find an arborist in your area with TRAQ (tree risk assessment qualification) certification.
The stump has rot and it looks hollow. That means lack of hinge and it being harder to predict and control the fall. Since you say it can hit your house if things go south, if it were in my yard I’d be inclined to hire someone to take it down.
IMHO, it's time to turn that one into firewood. And it sounds like you should hire an arborist or you could rent a boom lift. I did this on one and after cutting small branches off, I cut to stove length right off the tree.
I am thinking so too. I can get it it down safely, not concerned about that. The spring storms are not as cautious as I am about where it falls.
It's difficult to say sitting here in my living room. Being one on the cautious side, I would say if you have to ask you are better off hiring a pro to drop it or renting a lift and work from the top down.
Looking at the pictures I can see a few reasons to take it down. Up where it looks like it lost a leader some time back, is rotted and will continue to rot. The base looks like it has some defects to it, but the second to last pic shows a crack in the trunk. Will it continue to live for a while yes, trees can do some amazing things. Too bad because it is actually a decent looking tree.
yeah it is a nice tree and would hate to have to cut it down , but rather that than have it fall wherever I suppose.
That tree has been there quite a long time and has seen it's share of some pretty bad storms I imagine. I don't think the tree is going to uproot and blow over, My thought is that if that thing has a full canopy of leaves and you get a freak windstorm that comes along, is that tree sound enough to stay in one piece with the stress crack in the trunk or the cavity up the trunk. I work for a tree company and we see what look like perfectly healthy trees with huge amounts of rot in them supporting the canopy, wondering how are they still standing.
Yep I agree trees are pretty awesome organisms. As an arborist I've seen all kinds of amazing things. To sit and say that tree needs to come down based on a few pictures over the internet is ludicrous! Mykidsdadd I'll reiterated my recommendation that you have an arborist out to advise you on weather the tree is sound enough to keep around. Well worth the few hundred the professional advice would cost.
That tree certainly appears to be compromised, but as Barcroftb said, it's really hard to give any kind of solid opinion on these things without being right there to evaluate it.... If the tree can be taken down safely, that's probably your best option......but if you're hesitant in any way whatsoever, please get a qualified arborist to help you, at least to get it safely on the ground where the felling hazard is out of the picture.
Thank you all for the replies and advice. I know it’s hard to say based on a couple photos. Please know my decision wouldn’t solely be based on input from the forum. I was simply looking for some others opinions to add to my own and then decide what to do. I am confident that I can fell the tree safely and have decided to do so before spring sets in here.
