Actually it was on a bank. Three weeks back i was cutting my "the mania continues" score and noticed this BL blow down across the street. Went, knocked and got the okay to park, cut and take the wood. 20" DBH tree. 80-90% of a cord.
Perfect with a place to park off the road and roll rounds down rather than carry them up. IMG_3957.JPG IMG_3958.JPG IMG_3959.JPG IMG_3960.JPG
Im cutting, shut the saw off and this round cracks making a pop. Thought the rest of the trunk might be cracked but wasnt. IMG_3961.JPG
    IMG_3962.JPG IMG_3963.JPG
Homeowner came out and we chatted for a bit. He tells me that the BL was planted by the nursery owner up the street many years ago for fence posts. I love a good story like that. Said i could take this dead BL log too. IMG_3964.JPG IMG_3965.JPG IMG_3966.JPG
Not enough room in PU for the score. Few logs to buck from trunk and the dead log. IMG_3967.JPG IMG_3969.JPG IMG_3968.JPG IMG_3971.JPG IMG_3972.JPG
The BL round hoard grows. Three rows deep now. IMG_3973.JPG IMG_3974.JPG
Tempted to brave the brutal cold tomorrow and go back for the rest and work across the street.

Work is very slow and with snow cover i cant anyhow. Ground is frozen (which only happened a bit last year) and im taking advantage of it. Winter is my favorite firewood making season.
It was cold around 32* with wind picking up. Sunny and dry. I stopped a few times to appreciate it. Got to storage and wind was whipping.

    Oh to live on
    Locust Mountain
    With your Fiskars and
    the yellow wood too...

Nice grab! Looks like you've got some serious splitting ahead of you. If you could stay warm enough, tomorrow looks like a good splitting day. You won't catch me out there splitting when it's 10 degrees though! Not if I could help it anyway :) 90 is too hot and 10 is too cold. I think when it's mid 30s it's perfect.

It was a heavier than usual BL load for me. I had nearly a 25 minute ride to storage and felt it. A long uphill on the ride there.

Brad, did you just say 32* is cold? That’s pretty darn good firewooding temps round here. 10* isn’t bad as long as the hands can stay warm. Now once it starts getting in the 0*s that’s no good for nothing!

I guess i did. It hasnt really got that cold and the wind had started to pick up. Plus the snow on the wood made my hands get colder, even with the insulated gloves. When my tongue sticks to the saw bar (before cutting with it), then its cold. The media around here area bunch of drama queens anyhow. I love the cold.

Yeah you folks out there are used to the "bitter" cold. With the open plains that wind chill must be something fierce. Im being adventurous and headed out again tomorrow. Highs in the teens to 20 with very windy conditions.

At this point of the year in wisconsin 32F you would see people out on shorts   When I split that oak last weekend it was right around 8F out and I started sweating and had to remove my coat.

I actually like to get into the woods and cut on the sunny but negative temps, it's hard to talk your self into it at first but once you start cutting it feels nice out.

Same forecast highs here, but no windy. Gotta go dispose of a widow maker over a trail, then we're gonna skid logs tomorrow & Saturday! About time!

Being only in the teens and wind chill below zero i questioned my sanity about hoarding today. Snow coming Monday and ground nice and solid so i layered up and cut the rest.
About half a PU full including dead log. Just over a cord for the score. IMG_3975.JPG

I left the truck parked and went across the street to work the "the mania continues" score to fill the load.

My limit is 8 degrees. It took me a while to determine the exact number, but that's mine.

Even with my insulated gloves my index fingers started to go numb. Normally i wear thermals with a T shirt over that and a pull over sweatshirt with a hood. On colder days i have a down vest but today i put on the heavy carhardtt coat. The bulkiness limits my mobility so i was going slow. I got there with out the coat and said oh this isnt too bad and a huge gust of wind funneled down the street. Up went the hood and on went the coat. Ski cap normal too. Once the blood gets moving my fingers were okay and wasnt the least bit cold. I dont think it hit 20* and was very windy. If there wasnt snow coming for Monday i mightve skipped today, but snow will not allow me to get into storage so im taking advantage of the cold and down time.

Was so cold today ice wasn’t even slippery just squeaky But that -30 wind chill convinced me to warm by fire with a hot Toddy after 15 minutes.

Nice looking rounds. Perfect size BL IMO. The dead BL looks like its still good to go.
Out after work splitting. Mid 20s , not sure wind chill. If was cold but wind started to die down. I really like working when its cold out. I usually wear a tee, with a long sleeve heavier tee, pull over sweatshirt and a down cabelas vest. The vest is bulky but doesn't limit movement. Started sweating a little today. Took knit hat off for a minute and that took care of that situation.

You are on a BL hoarding mission lately!! Have you tried burning any of the dead barkless stuff yet? Curious to see if/how it will do. Those bedliners sure make it easy to slide wood to the back.
