It has often occurred to me that we tend to live like we are wealthy, whether we are or not. Why do we think we need the biggest, best and most expensive? Why do we think we need any of it?

That was a long time ago! You are telling your age. Nowadays, they mail or send home a "list" of "required" items such as a particular brand of ruler, pen, notebooks, locker padlock, etc; and it had BETTER be the kind teacher says!!o_O

I drive old vehicles as well. Most cars I see when I drive by a highschool are nicer than mine. Bit I put my money elsewhere. Everything runs fine on my vehicles.

Avoid brand names, bulk buy only if it you know you are going to use it. Doesn't do any good to buy a big box of cereal if it is going to go stale. I drove my self nearly crazy chasing things that really don't g0 off when your turn them off. Phantom power is the term. I gota thing that measures' the use of phantom power to the tv, dvd player and computer. Turned out I wouldn't save a buck by going around and unplugging them. I had a freezer we were not using much. that was costing 14 bucks a month.
Coupons are another way to save. There are stories about coupon ladies that fill their baskets for nearly nothing. Grow your food when you can. There are a lot of creature comforts I won't go without. I worked very hard to get the kids through college. Went without toys, eating out etc. Now, that has changed. I am older. If I really want it. I get it. Pay for it and life goes on.

    All good ideas.
I buzz my own hair....I quit worrying about what others think of how my hair looks a long time ago. Needs less shampoo too.
Got rid of car payments back in '09 and drive an '03 Jeep. We've had to put some money into it, but no payment.
Got rid of cable back in '08, I think, and watch stuff online. I'd like to get rid of the landline, but my wife wants it, so..........
    Internet service is about $30/month.
We have a dumpster thing that only gets picked up as needed after I call the guy.
    Heat with firewood :axe::tree::fire:...:)
We also get some clothes from Goodwill (nice stuff too), and I only pay for the cheap jeans at Wally's since I mess 'em up so quick. I'd do that even if I didn't.
I've not bought a pair of $30 (or more) jeans in a LOOOOONG time.
I need a new pair of boots, but the ones I have were purchased back in '07. Just started leaking a bit last winter.
Only one CC that I pay almost 2x payments every month to get rid of it.
    Do most repairs myself.
Make a run to the big city stores much less frequently after the shopping list gets big enough to warrant the trip.
    I suppose there's more, but I can't think anymore right now.

Yep that show is called "Extreme couponing"It was a reality tv series that ran for iI think 2 seasons on TLC may e 3? Honey booboo mom appeared on it around the same time that booboo was on "todlars and tiaras" another tlc reality show that let to "here comes honey boo boo". Told you I am a tv lover. I watch a lot. Its our entertainment.

Anyway the show would show a woman going to get $800 worth of groceries for like $17 or something. Lots of coke, boxxed pasta, toilet paper, shampoo, laundry detergent, tooth brushes , deoderant, cat food and pasta..mayonnaise and mustard. Basically you could not live off the stuff but if you never had to buy shampoo, detergent , deoderant or pasta or TP you could save a good bit over the years.

Forgot about the phantom power thing. Done that.
Use LED and CFL bulbs and have for several years.
Yard light costs a flat $12/month, and I'd like to get rid of it and do a dusk to dawn LED and pay for the minimal power to run it.
Again, my wife likes it, so............

The cell phone carriers are really starting to **** me off. I don't have any need for the data plan and it used to be that you could get a basic flip phone without a data plan for a decent, low, monthly rate. They used to have a good number of basic phones to choose from. Now they're down to 2 or 3. They're pushing people onto the smartphones both because the make more money on the cost of the phone itself and they force you to sign up for a data plan. i might have to start buying used phones online in the future to avoid this. As it is now I still have a basic phone I go through Verizon and my wife and I have a family plan with both phones only costing $70 a month combined.

You forgot coolest and most stylish.

because the advertising agencies and most of your fellow citizens say so!

Last week my wife and I went to the beach with the kids, my mothers some cousins aunts etc

My wife wanted a piece of fried dough from the store that was about a little over a mile from where we were sitting. So I, being the three time husband of the year award winner that I am, offered to walk to go get it while she stayed with the kids. plus I wanted a piece for myself as well. it was a nice walk down to the store but when I got there they said we don't take debit/credit cards but you can use our ATM (I didn't have cash on me). There was a $3.75 surcharge to use the ATM. When I got back to where the family was my wife asked "where's the fried dough?" I of course replied "oh it's still at the store, they're holding it for us until I go back again with some cash."

And the single way to live most frugally and not spend money is: Don't buy another chainsaw every other week just to see how it might work or how it might work better.

    :D

Ok my Teflon suit is now on.
