Oak! (Just channeling buZZsaw BRAD with the title.

    Looking back to the stump.

    IMG_20210125_113747868.jpg

I posted that first because I had hoped to fell it 180deg from how it dropped. ~hangs head in shame~

No damage to me or anything else, other than ego.

The last trees I felled were much larger. This was 12in. I was way too deep with my wedge, and way too short on the hinge.

Lesson learned. Almost the hard way. I was able to side step it easily. I'm happy to share if it gives another member food for thought.

    Anyways......

I've had my eye on this tree for a few years. No crown. Die back. Loose bark. Woodpeckers had started.

It was my understanding that it was a red oak. As soon as I sunk the saw in, I knew it was white oak. I brought a piece of the wedge in to my wife. The sweet vanilla scent was strong.

I bucked until my saw went dry. It wasn't a full tank.

I gathered the rounds up near the far side of the trunk.
    IMG_20210125_115001193.jpg

I hope to get them all bucked and moved tomorrow. I'll also use my MM on the bottom piece. I won't be surprised if it's close to 30%

    Stay safe out there.

Good that you were able to avoid any damage to self. Trees can be deceiving sometimes. Nice score of WO.

Been there done that, dodged just like you did. Learned real fast to not underestimate the "small easy" ones. Nice firewood for sure!

I was just about to pound in some felling wedges to lift it. But, gravity did its thing. Gravity sucks.

Glad it ended up alright for ya! Always clear an escape route for the direction the think the tree will fall as well as for the way you don’t think it will. That’ll make some great btus, Mike. Nice work:yes:

Glad it didn't hang on the tree beside it.
Looks like you cut through the hinge on 1 side a bit. I did that on a huge 3 stem sweet gum. I had a big felling wedge in it, cut a little, pound wedge, cut a little, pound wedge. I didn't see that I was almost through the hinge on the far side. My wife was sitting on the tractor 90° to direction of planned fall. Before she could bring tractor over to push tree, it started falling, right where she was. She was able to get her and the tractor out of the way. We were both shakin' for awhile. Thatbwasba BAD feeling.

Glad to hear all were safe.

Anyone around a tree felling needs to be aware. And, they need to know what direction to move if things go squirly.

I bucked and moved the rounds today.
    IMG_20210126_084112410.jpg

I'll move a splitting stump and slice them up right there

    Reverse angle
    IMG_20210126_084132231.jpg

That is some heavy wood. More than a cinder block. Carried each 30ft, uphill. I was thinking about sinking the x27 in them but wanted to take a break. I still may go out and pound on a few.

ok... I just decided that I will go back outside and split. It's such a nice morning.

Here's the only place with any rot. The humming birds knew where to drill.
    IMG_20210126_083058421.jpg

Twin leaders. I had taken the one on the left, down a number of years. I'll be back and saw it free.
    IMG_20210126_084228723.jpg

Darker wood as it got near the roots. It'll probably lighten up being exposed to air.

I stacked the splits in a convenient, temporary area, right next to where I was splitting.
    IMG_20210126_104336611.jpg

That WO was kicking my butt. Stringy and hidden knots. I needed to wedge n sledge.
    IMG_20210126_100044240.jpg

Nothing at all like the red oak I've been dealing with recently.

I left the 3 thickest for another day. Maybe they'll have some check marks by the time I get back to them.

It smells awesome in the wood yard today.

Yea its mild i could see someone getting vanilla. I feel it dries better than oak. The majority of my property is white oak and shagbark hickory.
