Last month i bought a chain saw bar from a guy on FBM. We've become friends talking chainsaws, wood etc. He worked on a saw and ive given him some logs. We barter mostly. Couple weeks ago im at his place and spied this big black locust blowover in the neighbors back hill and asked him about it. (the other wood hadnt been cut yet) He calls me yesterday to giving me the okay plus the neighbor had several trees taken down from the hill side too! Just done. I showed up this afternoon to check it out. Myself and saw ready for action. 75% of them BL plus the downed tree. "you can have all the BL" . He is taking the rest. Ground froze up and i was able to back up right to the retaining wall to load. An uphill embankment, bit of a tangle but i stepped directly from the wall into the PU to load. Cold windy day and the perfect day for making firewood! There was a few partly buried BL logs from a prior cutting. Dirty but no rot, attesting to its rot resistance. Probably a PU full of dead downed, mostly barkless BL in the mix yet to be had. One had sprouted new growth Wood pecker hole. Probably pileated based on the size. Ill hafta split and see if any ants Nice heaping load. 361 did the cutting. I'd say three more loads and its all downhill.
Wow, that's a good score! You are going to have to start burning year round to use up a 1/10 of the wood you have!
Brad, you're obsessed! The B L M movement must have been coined by you and you alone.....black locust = MINE. Ever wonder that when all the black locust is gone, there'll be an image of you nest to the article showing responsibility for it's demise?? Nice job and easy loading. I can remember only one time where I had the load up easy like that. Some of the chunks actually rolled right into the truck that day!
Ok yeah that was an easy day . But it’s a different type of scrounge, almost cheating Takes a lot of the fun out of it.
I dropped the tailboard and backed to within inches of the wall and literally stepped off the wall into the truck. Couple more loads in that yard. The Big BL is in the next yard. No wall there
Ready for splitting. More frozen ants. Ground frozen and snow coming so going for two loads tomorrow.
I haven't seen any but maybe towards the east end (warmer clime) who knows? I will cut any hardwood. Red oak, ash, maple, yellow birch, ironwood. Not too often but now and then white birch. Usually, some of that weed basswood shows up but I try to avoid it as well as aspen and of course, any evergreen species as it causes chimney fires.
Brad how much BL do you have stockpiled? Keep it up and you will have to get a F450 with a flatbed and 5 foot racks, so you can just roll from BL score to BL score and only unload once a day.
You do run across many scores brother and I know not everyone has access to firewood as we see some comment of such and I feel for those that don't. I will also tell you that I mention quite often in my prayers before a meal.... "Thank you Lord that I have places to cut wood" It's truly a blessing.
Id say roughly 14 cord. I have another 1.5 cord from this score and "maybe" more in the works. Stay tuned. I like the way you think with the F450 though.
