Same here, suppose to be in mid 40's today with brilliant sunshine before the weekend chill sets in. I almost called out sick to work on the chicken coop....

Oh it's cold here now. 9° out this am at 8am but was 7° for a low overnight. It was 41° yesterday.

With the wind chill factored in, it feels like -6° even now at 9:30. It's not even that windy 10-15 mph.

Cold here, more like January weather. First half of the month was more like November. Not much ice on the rivers and lakes. Yet people are going out on it and there have been a lot of rescues from falling through. I am sure that as soon as we get a few more inches of snow cover, that there will be a lot of snow machines and trucks breaking through the ice. Big ice fishing place just 2 miles down the road that normally is running strong this time of year. They fish for smelt on the Kennebec. Nothing happening there yet, but the ice is getting better with the cold wave. Usually those santies are putting out huge amounts of smoke that fills the valley making the air not fit to breath. I am lucky that my home is high up on a hill so the smoke doesn't get up here. There are a couple stores near there that sell a heck of a lot of beer when those shacks are active. February is usually the last full month of fishing for them. It is tide water and moves fast so the ice out is early.

Got my taxes done last night. Getting and $62 return...just the way I like it. I don't like giving free loans.

I recall going smelting at backers many years ago. Great place to fish and have a beer. I remember hearing the ice make noise a night and made me wonder if I was going in . :)

My friend wants to get out on local ponds, but I don't think at this point we will have good ice. I'm looking past ice fishing and thinking spring and tapping a few maple trees

In MI the smelt runs are in April. If you happen to be a Yooper you can get 3 runs of them! First from Huron, then Michigan and finally Superior. It all depends when the ice goes out and water temp is right. Much alcohol is usually consumed on a good smelt dipping night.

I don't think they really get filed until mid February. There's delays this year, because of the year that was...

But doing them online sure makes it easy, I'll say that.

I recall my dad doing taxes when I was a kid. Paperwork all over, he wasn't ever happy doing taxes. Not like I really enjoy doing taxes online, but it's sure a lot easier even with more complications than my parents ever had.

I can't file them for a few more weeks...but all I have left to do is hit the submit button. My taxes are super easy though.

My brother in-law called me up yesterday hoping I could spare some firewood for him. He's been out of work for 6 months due to major back surgery and is looking to use the open fireplace in his house. Why certainly I can spare a pickup truckload of Ash. I'll hook him up tomorrow. I've been looking around for some Hickory for a while now and just this afternoon I was able to grab a 6" diameter limb that was dead on the ground, bark falling off. I bucked it and loaded it up and it seems dry enough to burn right away. Hopefully I can come across a more substantial amount next time.
