Thank you for the best wood prOn in a long time. Wow... Some really nice logs there.
Are you going to keep the various logs and splits separate so you can see how they age and burn? You've got a nice opportunity to do so, if you so choose.

    Again, thanks for the pictures.

Can’t beat that! I’m assuming the ground is frozen up good? Nice that you aren’t having to deal with snow at the moment:yes: Do the pics represent one course or several? Appears to be a good amount of firewood. Nice work!

I agree, i will never burn it in my fire pit again.
I have been using it in my fireplace along with some oak. It really throws off some heat, but I can’t stand the smell.
    Oak smell so much better.

Not what I wanted to hear, I have a fireplace also. Is it that bad? I guess I'll have to find a few splits to try for myself and see

Give it a try. It’s not as bad when it’s mixed with other firewood.
It does burn long and hot.
I don’t think I will go out of my way for it anymore.

I recently burned black locust a few fires in my fireplace and I didn't smell anything and I've got a super sensitive sniffer. FWIW, the wood was a deadfall and was ready to burn; bark was off or falling off for the most part.

I stack the stuff that needs longer drying time (oak, hickory) together. Then I stack maple, beech and cherry together since it dries faster. I built a wood shed that holds about 2 1/2 yrs. worth of wood for me (4 cords). It’s divided down the middle into two halves. Each side has 4 rows 6’ wide and 7 1-2’ high. The back two of each row are the oaks and hickory. The front is the others. Currently I’m finishing up burning the right side of the shed. 1 more full row to go. Then it will be refilled this spring and I will start burning the left next winter. This gives me a touch over 2 years drying time on each side of the shed. Hope this makes sense.

Ground not too frozen. Early mornings it is but we’ve been in the low 40s during the day here on LI.

This is only one course. I have another which I keep to myself mostly since it has real quality ash which is very hard to find here on the island.

So kudos to lukem. Went back and cut and split what I thought was white oak. Turns out it’s not. lukem said pin oak yesterday which I’ve never dealt with, but once I split this stuff it sure didn’t look like any oak I’ve ever split. That being said it’s nice looking stuff. Very dense and straight grained. The locust in the picture is for My buddy not me

Yup thats pin oak. Has a manure smell to it. Same rules for red/white oak seasoning.

I actually was going to ask if it’s
Ossicle it’s some kind of hickory?
Either way it’s great, dense, easy splitting wood

Well, the beech definitely smells better when burning. They are about the same BTU, both typically split easily, unless you have a twisty beech. The locust sparks, beech doesn't. Beech doesn't keep dirt in the bark like black locust does, so your chain will stay sharp longer in beech. The beech will also leave less mess in your house for to the lack of dirt and smooth bark. Then again, that BL bark might just fall off before you burn it.

I say smell while burning wins. Beech smells like a lightly smoked vanilla. It's amazing really.

Yeah it's not good for campfires due to that alone.
