Had two large oaks that lost their tops in one of the past wind storms so finally got after them today. I don’t usually cut any live oaks as I have more dead standing than I will ever get to. After processing these two I remember why and so does my back.

Nice, you must have a lot of oaks, looks like the ground is covered with solid oak leafs.

Nice straight sticks that weren’t too large to load. Doesn’t get much better. It’s a labor of love, no? :)
After bringing home a couple trees like that from my old boss’s place, I severely regretted not noodling them in half. One of these days I’ll learn, hopefully before there’s an issue. Be safe, work smart not hard.

Could you post a few photos of the winch setup you are using? I want a forestry winch but can't justify the cost, and I need something that is cheap and can easily attach to the 3-point hitch of my tractor. I was considering modifying a box blade for this purpose, basically welding on a secondary frame to mount an ATV winch, but yours looks like something you'd put in a receiver hitch?

Yes lots of oaks and pine. We bought 23 acres 11 years ago and I have been taking 6-8 cords of dead standing oak out per year and the occasional live one do to storm damage.

Here is my receiver hitch winch set up. All from TSC but replaced the cable with HF winch rope as I don’t like working with the cable. Bought a back up rope incase it broke but have not needed it in 6 years I use it now to extend my reach to 100’ off the trail.

And that's wired into your tractor's electrical system?

That's how every one I've ever seen is wired, either on my old broncoII, as well as all the ATVs I've seen and wired.

    Nice setup!

Have you thought about bringing the splitter into the woods and doing that part in the woods?
I've been being the splitter into the woods and splitting where the rounds are, especially if they are big and heavy. That way you only ever move/ lift the big round one time. They are all lighter after you crack them at least in half. Also, there's less splitter chaff and clean up to deal with. I've been trying to get as efficient as I can, and this has been a big help so far.

Great minds think alike. The last two trips out back I have been thinking of taking the splitter out by setting up a hitch on the back of the trailer. I did that with my chipper put a hitch on the back for the trailer . Any thoughts?

BX2360 I have always thought about getting something bigger but all my trails are 4’ wide or just over with lots of over hanging trees. Borrowed a friends L 3901 once but it was just to big for my trails.

Post up a pic of the back of the trailer.

You could do like I do and take a second trip. Haul the splitter first. That might not be feasible. I use a 4wheeler in the woods, so the trips can be pretty quick.

Two trips would not bother me just that Jane likes to split and stack at the same time so who am I to change the system
