My neighbor cut some oaks off the edge of a field, I'd say 6 yrs ago. I took a prime chunk of it and mounted my anvil on it 5 yrs ago. I replaced it with a piece of elm this year, so I just split it up. It's amazing, it's still 25% moisture.
I’m not surprised either. Unsplit with the ends mostly covered. Very hard for the moisture to get out.
Similar results here. I needed a couple more short lengths of red oak for a bench I’m building. Decided to extract them from a squarish chunk of firewood today. The piece they came from was a dead fallen tree, about 3 years on the ground and had been split and stacked for 2 1/2 years. After ripping the boards on the table saw I checked the MC and it averaged 25%.
I'm surprised the wood would have that much mc after that long, but I've never checked the mc of wood until learning about it on here. Eric Schamell, what will you have to do with those pieces now? I'm assuming you cant use them like they are (mc wise)...
Yeah they're still wetter than I'd like them to be. They're small enough to where if I leave them in indoors for a while the MC might drop relatively fast so I may just let them sit for a bit. For what I'm using them for it's not that critical, just some supports that will be mostly covered up.
