I dunno what it is but it sure is unique with the ring around the heartwood, that's interesting. Doesn't look like hickory to me, and not red maple but as for other maples, I am unfamiliar. I bet somebody will def ID this.

I really feel like it’s a maple. There are many others on the property. Some really large specimens over 3’ across

Maple. Twigs / limbs are opposite. I'd say red.

I'd agree with Eckie, opposite branching =maple.

Wow, if that is red maple, the bark looks nothing like red maples we have here. Your tree's bark looks very similar to loblolly pine!

The buds also look like maple. They look like the flower buds of Red. Not a guarantee, but I see a lot of red maple at work.

Definitely a hardwood. I’m pretty sure a maple. I have tons of sugar and know what silver looks like. This is different. I’m thinking red may be it.

I also think it's maple, but am not certain which kind.

Yeah, it sure looks like a maple, but which one? Possibly red?

Yes, I know it's a hardwood, my only reason for commenting about loblolly pine was because it would be really weird if it turned out to be red maple! I would not be surprised it's a maple, but would be if it's red maple. Ours here are so different! The bark on OP tree is very uniform (like a pine!) and maple here rarely is.

Could definitely be red maple, but it is reminiscent of.....
    Tree ID: Swamp maple?
I'm leaning towards maple myself, the branches scream maple to me. The one thing throwing me off is the heartwood. In all the red maples I've dealt with, the center was not uniformly colored like that. They've all looked more like a Rorschach inkblot test to me.

Sure looks like the same as the one called swamp maple in your posted thread. But other commenters in that thread say it's pignut hickory!

Yeah, this one is tricky. Swamp maple is another term for red maple. I'm sure being there in person to smell it, to cut it up, and split it would make it easier. In the first picture there's a hinge piece on the end cut. If it was Hickory, I think it would look more splintered. That to me looks like maple.

DEFINITELY not swamp maple. I have one in my yard. Magenta colored buds make me lean red. I saw the heart wood and thought hickory too but it’s not. I’ve taken hickory from there. I’m thinking it was just cit down within the past hour so still real wet. Pretty sure it’s a maple. Not sugar or swamp.

In my region, swamp maple is just another name for red maple...
